Dear Parents

“… if anything were to go wrong, South Africa will have an ability to hike taxes.  It has an ability to make sure that whatever money is outstanding is well catered for.”

Lesiba Mothata - economist

We all wait in perhaps not-so-eager anticipation for S&P’s announcement of our sovereign credit rating later today.  Hopefully the news is good.  I always read the back page of any newspaper first.  Sport reporting is mostly about success and good news – the front pages not so much, but then bad news sells, doesn’t it?

The good news for us comes in so many ways at school.  Spend five minutes with the Apple Pips or Busy Bees – and any woes are soon forgotten.  We’ve also enjoyed a wonderful series of outings and events at school which you can read more about below or on our website at: http://swellendamtours.co.za/our-news/

It has been quite a busy time for your teachers at school.  We have been reassessing our reading and writing standards from Grade 1 to 7 (in both home languages).  The Pre-Primary is busy with an entirely new assessment procedure, one which will improve an already thorough process of understanding children and as a staff in general we have been working on co-operative learning approaches in the classroom.

We have also sourced a windows device for teaching and learning in the classroom.  The teachers have committed to buying the devices themselves and will be working with them for the next year as we progress our understanding of educational technology.

On top of all of that I am taking the staff through their strength profiling.  This process will help us all be more personally aware of who we are as people and how this affects our teaching, our ability to work together and to work towards common goals.

So, nothing out of the ordinary then at school, just a lot of fun being had!

I hope you’re all enjoying yourselves as much as we are and that this evening’s S&P announcement only brings good news.

Applewood on Google maps

We have been updating much of our “web presence” (thanks to Alison Walker for all her guidance here) and part of that presence is our “business location” on Google Maps.  Please click HERE and visit the Google Maps location.  While you are there, please leave a review so that Google knows we exist and makes the link live for those searching for quality schools like ours.

Have a lekker weekend!

Die goeie nuus vir ons kom op so baie maniere hier by ons skool.

So, niks buitengewoon by die skool nie – net baie pret!

Geniet ‘n lekker naweek!

Pre-Primary

Another exciting week done and dusted, as we spent some concerted effort in preparing for our special grandparent's visit.

Not to mention a very exciting visit from the fire brigade, in a new and shiny red engine. We got to hear the siren and learnt exactly what to do in the case of a fire in our home and school. Thank you fire department, experiential learning is the best way for us to absorb the information.

In Apple Pips this week we focused on the subject of pets. Please admire our beautiful fish bowls and cats!

In Busy Bees this week we continued on our subject of fireman. Our pictures of fire were constructed using a variety of mediums and skills. We are also very excited to report that next week is the last week we will lose Teacher Helen to her studies, well, at least for a while. Good luck Teacher Helen! Almost there!

In Clever Cats this week we focused on dentistry. We looked at different dental hygiene musts, and enjoyed some amazing fantasy play where some of us were teeth, and some of us the germs. A lot of fun was had by all.

Have a blessed weekend
The Pre-Primary team

Grade 5 Outing to !Khwattu

The Grade 5 class went on a new outing to !Khwattu, a Khoisan venue near Ysterfontien. We had lots of fun sleeping in tented "huts", riding bikes, cooking food and learning more about the Khoisan. Did you know that the exclamation mark is often found at the beginning of a word in various Khoisan dialects, and takes the form of a letter?

Woolworths MySchool Competition

We have entered the Woolies MySchool #WIN R100K FOR YOUR SCHOOL Competition.

The competition runs for the next 3 months (April – June) and during this time whenever you shop at Woolies and swipe your MySchool Card, you will increase Applewood’s chance of winning R100 000 (score is based on number of items you buy x number of swipes). You will also automatically be entered to stand a chance of winning one of 12 x R50 000 bursaries towards your child’s education!

The competition is part of a broader Woolies campaign to help raise R100 million for education in South Africa. So even if Applewood (or one of our supporters don’t win this competition), we will be contributing to our overall MySchool funds and also be making a difference to other less privileged schools by participating. It’s a win-win!
