Dear Parents

“It's like your children talking about holidays, you find they have a quite different memory of it from you. Perhaps everything is not how it is, but how it's remembered.”

Denis Norden

The end of term is upon us and the holidays loom large and happy in the children’s minds.  Please make the most of them and if you are travelling, do so safely.

Semester Reports

The semester reports for Grades 1 to 7 will be emailed out later today.  Please take the time to read these through with the children.  Take note of the aims/suggestions that their teachers have made and bask in the positive – and then let the children forget about school for a while!

So much of the current research on the brain indicates that rest and breaks from managing the mountains of information that bombard us every day is crucial to improving memory and learning.  It is a fact that our brains learn so much better in nature than in the artificial environments we live in, so take some time to get the little ones into the bush, into the garden or into the mountains – but get them outside every day this holiday!

If your children make use of the aftercare facility at school, please ensure that they are signed out and that Portia is informed that you (or your designated other) has taken the children.

Congratulations to Oliver and Isabella Pritchett, Fiona Boome and Angeliq Coetzer who have been selected to play for the South Boland tennis team.  The children will play in a regional tournament in August after which they may be invited to the final Boland trials.  We wish them happy serving.

Headmaster Position

Thank you to the many of you who have taken the time to express your regret, disappointment and concern over my decision to accept the position at St Andrews.  Thank you too, to all of you, for the expressions of support and good wishes alongside of the sadness.

The Council have asked me to participate in the selection process of the new head, which I am both honoured and willing to do.  The post was advertised today and we had three applications within the first hour.  We are also doing some head-hunting of our own.  We will find the right person for the job!

Enjoy the holidays!

Mr B

Term 3 Calendar

Please take note of the following:

• School opens Tuesday, 19 July.

• Sport starts Tuesday, 19 July.

Cultural Evening

The Foundation Phase Cultural Evening was a wonderful celebration of music and talent.  The performance started with beautiful singing followed by a variety of instruments such as, violins, piano, recorder, guitar, marimbas and drums.  The Sound of Music theme certainly brought out the best in the children, displaying the cultural potential we have at Applewood.  The Applewood song to the tune of Edelweiss; written by a group effort of Senior children, celebrated the values we nurture at Applewood.  The drums, of course, were the highlight of the evening.  We might have some rock stars in the making...!  We would like to congratulate the Foundation Phase and Music team for arranging such a successful evening.

Grade 6 Outing

On Wednesday the Grade 6's hiked the Palmiet River Trail outside Kleinmond and on Thursday they went to the Pritchett's farm to look at their tunnels and tunnel farming.

Grade 4's Knitting and Nattering For Mandela day.

Grade 5 - Willy Wonka Speeches

GAWS Needs All Your Unwanted Books

Grabouw Animal Welfare

Books are what we are all about for the next 2 months

Once again we are lucky to be part of the annual Charity Book Sale happening at Somerset Mall the last weekend of July, in order to make it a success we require your help.

We are looking for your new and old books, reading to gardening and cooking.

It would be fantastic if each of you would go through your book shelves and ask your friends to do the same. Every book collected could make a difference.

Books we don’t require are encyclopaedias, readers digest, old books that are torn or damaged, school text books, foreign language or magazines.

We are happy to collect in the Helderberg area, Books can otherwise be dropped off at the Grabouw Vet.

If you are based in Cape Town and have some lovely books for us, give us a shout and we’ll make a plan.

You are welcome to contact Justine via this email address or call 076 549 6601.

We’d like to have all the books by the end of the first week of July.
