22 July 2016

 Dear Parents

“It’s not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.”

Charles Darwin

What wonderful holidays so many of the children seem to have had.  The excited stories, the swapping of tales and the delight in seeing friends again always characterise the first day back at school.

The holidays were a time of growth for many of the Applewood staff.  Our Pre-Primary staff attended a Reggio Emilia conference in Cape Town (read more about the Reggio Emilia system here) and returned bursting with information.  Mrs Moodie and Miss van der Merwe are currently attending a Singapore Maths conference in Pretoria and the staff concluded their strength-finder development programme with a goal-setting workshop on Monday.

We have set ourselves the goal of rewriting the curricula of the various subjects at Applewood, uploading the curricula documents, with all associated planning documents and resources to a newly-designed internal website by the end of this term.  We’ll be busy!

Welcome

We welcomed Lea du Plessis back to Applewood in Grade 5 at the start of the term and Sabrina Dicey in Apple Pips.  We wish them both a happy, exciting and enjoyable time with us.

School Gate

At the Council meeting last term it was resolved that the school gate should be motorised and kept closed during the day.  You will have all seen the work happening at the gate.  The motor is installed and will be in operation from the close of school today.

NB!! From Monday onwards, the gate will be open between the following times:

•

07:00-08:30

•

12:15-13:00

•

13:45-14:15

•

14:45-15:15

Should you arrive at school outside of these hours, you will need to request access by using the intercom which is placed on the passenger side of the road to buzz the office.  The intercom has been placed on the passenger side of the road because of the three-way traffic at our gate.

Parents whose children are at Aftercare must phone Portia on

072 548 6128 to gain accessPlease note the Aftercare phone number will only be available from 15:15 to 17:00 or when the last child leaves.

The change to an automated gate has been made in the interest of the security of your children.  We hope we have thought of most issues around times and access but are happy to respond to concerns and suggestions to improve access flow.

Breakdancing Workshop for all at Applewood Saturday 23 July 14:30 - 16:00

Our new hip hop dancing teacher Taryn Van Zyl has arranged for an exciting, fun and funky afternoon of dancing at our school this Saturday!

Duane Lawrence is a South Africa B-Boy dancer (a style of breakdancing) who has won the international B-boy championships for 2 years in a row. He has offered to present a workshop, show some of his amazing moves and teach a few moves for you to try at home!!

The workshop is suited mostly for age 7 and up; adults are very definitely welcome! You don't need to be a dancer to take part, everyone is invited!

Costs: R60 per participant, R20 for adults who want to come and watch.

All participants must wear takkies and comfortable clothing to dance in.

See you there!!!!

Headmaster Position

There has been a rush of applications for what is clearly a sought-after position in the independent school arena.  12 Current heads of independent schools, 9 deputy heads from independent schools and 3 senior staff are amongst the applications we have received.

Applications close today after which candidates will be shortlisted.  The initial candidates (in the region of 20 or so) will be asked to respond to a written questionnaire.  This initial shortlist will then be reduced by the appointments committee to potential candidates who will be invited for a first round of interviews.  After the first round of interviews, and if necessary, a final list of candidates will be interviewed and an appointment made.  We expect the process to be finalised before the end of term and we will keep parents updated as the process unfolds.

Enjoy the weekend – and stay warm, apparently BIG cold is on the way!

Mr B

Breakdancing-werkswinkel vir almal by Applewood Saterdag 23 Julie 2:30 - 4:00nm

Pre-Primary

Welcome back! Hard to believe that we are entering the last half of the year, yet such a privilege to see how all your little ones have blossomed over the holidays. To have time with family is always rewarding and we can often witness their growth when they return.

It promises to be an exciting term, as we begin to rehearse our Pre-Primary production and continue our journey into spring.

This week has seen some exciting themes across all our classes.
In Apple Pips we have been focusing on the theme of winter. What fun was had as we got all messy in the mud and designed our very own storms. We were also super privileged to welcome a new friend, Sabrina Dicey.

In Busy Bees we are continuing an all time favourite theme, pets. We were very blessed to have Albert bring his budgie friends, Chip and Popcorn. One of our favourite activities this week was designing a picture of our dogs, where the main focus was to use a skill of tearing paper to stick on. This is a wonderful skill to practice with them at home, as it helps them use their hands in a coordinated manner.

This week in Clever-cats we were celebrating Mandela month with lots of discussions on how to be helpful and kind leaders. We all made a part of a fish and combined our efforts for a complete beautiful end product.
Happy birthday to Noah and Yoda who celebrated their birthdays during the holiday!

Heres to a successful and super fun term!

Grade 4 Outing to the Lion Park

Grade 4 - How to change my teacher into a toad!

Club-L kicked off on a high note this week with a record number of more than 60 books being taken out by our senior readers during only one break.  Fun was had by everyone as they had to first get their feet on some foot putt-putt in order to get their hands on the books they wanted!  These exciting books were all made possible by the generous donations of our parent community - thank you for making a difference,  one book at a time!   We would also like to thank Mrs Chanu, Mrs Karg and Mrs Coetzer for giving of their time to cover all the new books during the holiday - your under cover work covered it all!
