Dear Parents

Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean...

Which is exactly what the Grade 6 and 7 children did last week.  We were fortunate to be able to spend four days in the Cederburg – truly “God’s country.”

24 Children, Mrs Steyn, Mr Hart, three facilitators from the Cape Leopard Trust and I stayed at TokTokkie Camp in the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve.  It is a remote spot, away, far away, from cell reception, Eskom and any of the other intrusions of daily life.

The children followed a programme set by the Cape Leopard Trust with a focus on the work they are doing with the Cape Mountain Leopard.  They also explored the geology of the region (which is fascinating); were exposed to the rock art of the area; climbed some of the unique rock formations; hiked to the Maltese Cross and ancient Ceder tree; hunted for scorpions with ultra-violet lights (without success); searched for fossils in the sandstone and shale layers of the Bokkeveld Group (of which they found many – and a scorpion) and learnt about camp and bushwalk rules.

The children spent an hour each evening summarising the day’s learning in their project books and the Grade 7s are busy building a website report of their experiences last week – keep an eye out for a link when the website is complete.

My thanks to Mrs Steyn, Mr Hart (who cooks a really, really good steak) and the CLT facilitators who made this an experience to remember!

Angelic Coetzer, Fiona Boome and Isabella Pritchett have all been selected for the South Boland U10 Tennis Team to play in the regional tournament on the 14th and 15th of October. Congratulations to all three girls and we wish them all the best of luck!

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Please remember to book your slots for these end-of-term interviews.  They begin next week.

Winter Sports Day and Boeresport Dag

At this stage our Winter Sports Day and Boeresport Dag is still on – we’ll keep an eye on the weather and will send out information at 06:00 tomorrow.  The potjiekos competitions is being held in the car park – which will be closed as a result.  Please park down the side of the driveway or around the back of the JRV oval on the waste ground below the hall.

End of Term Arrangements

Mrs Luden has emailed/sms'd a host of information pertaining to the drama evening, school closing times and the last week of school.  Please take note of these details and keep your diary updated.

We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow – and hold thumbs, toes and anything else for the ‘Bokke!

Have a lekker weekend!

My dank aan Mev. Steyn, Mnr.

Mnr. B

Grade R Puppet Show

I received the warmest welcome from our fabulous Pre-Primary children when I returned to school last week. I was so proud to see how they have developed over the last four months and have thoroughly enjoyed joining in with their fun and creative play in the garden.

Many thanks to Lisa Muir for managing the Pre-Primary in my absence and for taking the staff under her wing! Thank you too, to teacher Marisa for teaching and inspiring the Clever Cats while I was away.

Reading in the garden is so lovely

Clever Cats

Clever Cats enjoying number work in class and in the Library!

Having fun with stories

‘Handa’s Surprise.’ This vibrant illustrated story took the Clever Cats into the world of a little girl in Kenya who plans to surprise her special friend Akeyo with a basket of fruit. They loved being ‘in the know’ as the readers, while Handa remained baffled by the animals stealing different fruit from the basket on her head. The children got to know the story really well through reading aloud using the illustrations and captions; small-world-play and re-enactment. We explored, described and tasted the fruit from the story and made a delicious fruit salad!  Thank you to parents for sending fruit into school.

The Clever Cats were extremely motivated to produce their own version of Handa’s Surprise. They made exciting and imaginative zig-zag books.

Welcome to the Applewood Family!

We extend a warm welcome to Shumirai Mamvuru and her family who has joined the Pre-Primary. We look forward to getting to know you.

Shumi, Shane, Caris-May and Mia having fun!

It will soon be that time of year again………………………… the Pre-Primary CONCERT!

Beautiful Creatures” will take place on the 1st and the 3rd of November. We will also be having a dress rehearsal on Friday, 29 October.  Please ensure these dates have been diarised. Thank you to those parents who are able to help us.  You will be receiving letters within the next week regarding where and when we require help.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The Grade 4 class had the most enjoyable day out yesterday. The Red Bus Tour of Cape Town was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The children listened attentively to the commentary through their earphones in order to gather the information they needed for their task. I think they have a new appreciation for the Mother City! A most welcome stop was the visit to the Green Point park - a good place to re-visit with your children.
