23 September 2016

Dear Parents

“[We should] transform schools from places of "doing to" students to places of "working with" students, to see kids' troubling actions not as infractions to be punished (where someone must be made to suffer), but as problems to be solved—and opportunities for teaching. If we need a simple reason to support these shifts, maybe it's sufficient that we want to make sure our actions never resemble those of a bully.

Alfie Kohn

Mrs Alison Walker sent me a link to a thought-provoking article by Alfie Kohn – one of the most prolific (and sensible) writers and speakers on education.  Read the article by clicking here – it’s well worth it!

Parent/Teacher Interviews

I trust you have all gained some insight into your child’s academic progress and have understood where they are and the progress they are making.  If you did not manage to make a time with your child’s teacher, please expect an email with correspondence relating to your child’s progress this term.

Winter Sports Day and Boeresport Dag

Winter Sports Day and Boeresport Dag will take place on Friday, 30 September.  School will start at the normal time and will end as published in the calendar with final assembly at 12:00.

A programme for the day will follow.

Term 4 Calendar

Mrs Luden has published a host of information for next term on the web calendar.  Please take the time to synchronise your personal calendars with the website.  We will also publish a term calendar (sent in PDF format) for those who prefer paper to electrons.

Have a lekker weekend!

Alfie Kohn

Mev.

Club-L Life Cycle of a Reader

During the past term our Grade 4 to 6 learners have had the opportunity to move along the fascinating life cycle of reading.  This was done by reading as many as possible books from the senior fiction section of the library and then being interviewed about these books by Mrs Steyn.

After many hours of reading joy and close to 150 interviews, we can confidently say:  reading at Applewood has taken a noticeable leap in the right direction!

Very well done to our top readers on the Read-it level!  They are:  In Grade 4 Fiona Boome, Ariane de Villiers , Isabella Pritchett, Joshua Hickson, Benjamin English, Angeliq Coetzer and Lara Myburgh.  In Grade 5 Emma Green, Quinn O'Keefe-Easton, Anika Venter, Georgina Gilfillan and James Hendricks.

The grade 6's have been studying pulses and their benefits to their health and the environment. This forms part of our Year of the Pulses theme for Natural Science. We tested a variety of plants storage organs for Protein, Sugar and Fats and Oils. Luckily the Pulses behaved themselves and the results showed that Pulses are low in Sugar and high in Protein.
