Dear Parents

When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.”

Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

Whew!  Things are happening… and happening fast as we approach the end of the year.  I’m sure you are all feeling the same.  We seem to get busier and busier each year – and doesn’t South Africa seem frantic at the moment?

It’s the time of year when we get to feeling tired and stretched and sometimes allow ourselves to feel “beaten.”  It’s a time of the year when as teachers we are grateful for the life-changing opportunities we see every day.  But it’s also a time of the year to remind ourselves that significance matters far more than success – whatever your definition of success is.  And it seems to me that South Africa is a point in time where significant people need to stand up and be counted – perhaps the same could be said of the politics in our little valley?

Pre-Primary Concert

Next week the Pre-Primary children will be on stage in their production of “Beautiful Creatures.”  The staff and children have been hard at work – as have so many of our parents in support of their little ones.  A very early thank you to all our mums and dads who have been hard at work with costumes, stage and set design and make-up.

Please remember to get your tickets from Amanda before Tuesday.

Angeliq Coetzer has been selected for the Boland Country Districts tennis team to compete in George next weekend.  Congratulations, Angeliq, and the very best of luck for 4 and 5 November!

Applewood Eco-School’s Submission

Every year Applewood submits a portfolio to the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA) as part of the Green Flag Programme.  Mrs Di Tuttelberg has compiled this year’s portfolio which was based on the theme “Pulses.”   Our submission is on our website so that you can share in the wonderful work the children and teachers are doing.

2017 Fee Increases

The annual fee increases have been determined and are now published.  A letter from the chairman of the school board, Mr Stephan Beukes regarding the fee increases, as well as the fee schedule for 2017 have been emailed to parents under separate cover.

Another Apple Core

We’re delighted to congratulate another of our Apple Cores, Nicholas Stegmann, who has been awarded his Junior South African colours for Water Skiing.  Nicholas competed in the E&A Youth Championships in Italy earlier this year.

Applewood is a young school, by any measure, and we are still building a database of Apple Cores.  Please send us any information about our past pupils – it is wonderful to be able to keep track of who is doing what and to begin to write stories about the school.

I will be away from Thursday to Sunday next week attending a memorial in KZN for an ex-colleague.

Enjoy the weekend!

Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

Sjoe! Ek is seker u voel almal dieselfde.

Applewood Eco-Skole Voorlegging

Elke jaar dien Applewood ‘n portefeulje by die “Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa” (WESSA) in as deel van die Groenvlag-program.  Mev.

Mnr. B

Grade 4 Science

The Grade 4 class made oobleck for their Mattter module in NS. They had great fun testing the qualities of this amazing substance, even having a go at running across it!

On Thursday the Grade 6’s went to Strand Beach to dig holes! This term they are studying “Holes” by Louis Sachar as their setwork book. In the book the main character has to dig a 5ft deep and 5ft wide hole each day at Camp Green Lake.  The Grade 6's experienced first hand what it is like to dig such a wide and deep hole and succeeded in digging their holes in record time!
