Dear Parents

Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Mr Sam Hamman

Mr Hamman and his wife, Robyn, will be visiting Applewood next week Wednesday and Thursday to meet with Council, the PA and staff.  Sam will attend the final council meeting of the year and will be able to spend time on Thursday morning at school meeting staff and children.

I will be making use of Sam’s visit to do a comprehensive handover.

We look forward to Sam’s visit and his move to Grabouw in December.  Sam will be in residence from the 15th of December onwards.

Staff Development

The staff spent yesterday afternoon exploring the creative process that children undergo in the classroom.  The workshop, run under the auspices of Mr Barry Coombe, allowed staff to get to grips, again, with what it’s like to be a child in a classroom.  Barry’s workshops focus on a growth mind-set point of view, something we have spoken often about as a staff this year.  It was an inspiring afternoon for the staff and the creative projects that came out of the day were inspiring!

Our thanks to Mrs Tina Beaumont who was the originator of the workshop idea and who organised the afternoon for the staff.

Grade 6 and 7 Exams

The Grade 6 and 7 children began their end-of-year exams today with their Afrikaans Kreatiewe Skryfwerk exam.  The children write until 28 November; their last exam being their English Creative Writing paper.

We wish them all the very best!

Those of you who haven’t seen the M&G piece on the cost of schooling in South Africa (and a response from the National Teacher’s Union) may find this interesting.

Have a lekker weekend!

Mr B

Mnr. Sam Hamman

Mnr.

Grade 7

The Grade 7 class took part in an international mystery Skype session on Tuesday. We were connected to an international school, whose location we did not know.  The point of the session was to establish the exact location of our guest's school.  The children did this by asking yes/no questions of a geographical nature.  Our guest school did the same in order to establish where in the world we are located.  We eventually established that our guests were from Logrono, in Spain. Much was their surprise when they learned that we are a small school in South Africa. This was an interesting exercise in Geography, language and international communication. We are planning to do more virtual field trips and educational fun activities through Microsoft in future.

We would like to make an appeal to our parent and learner bodies as we near the end of the school year and approach the festive season with the anticipation of the joy of giving and gratitude of receiving to consider our support staff.

Bongile, Phemla, Marshley, Helena, Joline, Zanekhaya and Fikile serve as our caretakers, cleaners and gardeners. They are always willing to assist with the preparations of functions as well.

We would like to give each a Christmas hamper and ask if you would kindly give an item of non-perishable food like sugar, tea, coffee, tinned food, starches, etc. Please give to the class teacher.

If each family donated only two items, we could make a really generously filled hamper for each of them!

Thank you for your support!
