“You have to go wholeheartedly into anything in order to achieve anything worth having.”

Frank Lloyd Wright

Observing the rivalry between Goldens and Royals this week has been inspiring. When there is something tangible at stake it is amazing how wholeheartedly children get stuck in. Let us pass on this ideal to our children. In our modern world there is so much opportunity to avoid getting stuck in. It is far easier to simply move on to the next exciting episode or reset. Teach them the courage to work hard and show commitment to success. The raising of children requires this kind of mindset. Wholehearted commitment to their development must be our complete focus.

I was very disappointed to learn this week that Peggy Zee is unfortunately unwell and will not be able to travel. Since we had put aside Tuesday evening for a Singapore Maths Workshop, I thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for me to address the parent body. I hope you have received your invitation via email and I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. We will have a classroom available for aftercare should you need this service. I am very excited about the future of Applewood and would like to share my thoughts with you.

Next week we will keep our focus on Mathematics. We will be running a Mathematics challenge through the grades and I will be running a few workshops through the phases focusing on mathematics pedagogy.

Last week the Grade 4 to 7 classes took part in a study skills workshop run by our teachers. It was a huge success and our children now have a good idea of a number of strategies suited to their individual learning styles. I would like to thank all the teachers who were involved for their thorough preparation. The learnt skills are being implemented in the classroom.

I would like to extend an invitation to all of our parents to attend our annual Inter-House gala at the Grabouw High School swimming pool next Friday. We would like to ask parents who are not attending the gala to drop their children off at the pool by 07:50. The gala is due to start at 08:00 and children can be collected at 11:00.

Thank you to the PA and Pre-Primary for a wonderful Wacky Walk last week. Great fun was had by all and a good sum of money was raised.

I was very pleased to receive a call from Meg Fargher, the Executive Head of Somerset College, this week. A few weeks ago, some of our Grade 7's wrote entrance exams at Somerset College. Meg phoned to compliment Applewood on the high standard of Mathematics results which these children obtained in these exams. It is wonderful to hear such positive feedback about our Mathematics programme.

On Tuesday next week we welcome 12 little Apple Blossoms to Applewood's Pre-Primary section. This is an exciting new chapter in the history of the school and we look forward to having the Blossoms amongst us.

Ms Melissa van Jaarsveld will teach the Apple Blossoms and she will fall under the close guidance of Mrs Annie Aplas Hill.

I hope you all enjoyed the Athletics meeting today. Have a fantastic weekend.

Volgende week Dinsdag verwelkom ons 12 klein Apple Blossoms by Applewood se Pre-Primêre afdeling.

The Grade 5 class ended off their China Module with some enlightening demonstrations. Tea ceremonies, Martial Arts demonstrations and talks about Chinese New Year customs gave us all greater insight into Chinese life. The final activity, The Great Chopstick Challenge, was attempted with much enthusiasm and tongue-biting! The worthy winners were Abigail 1st  and Mieke in very close 2nd position.

On Monday the Grade 6 class went to Iona farms to pick Shiraz grapes and stomp them into grape juIce. This will now sit in a barrel till later in the year when they bottle the wine and add their own lables . Many  thanks to Rozy Gunn for being so willing to assist us with this project and Karen for always being so willing to help with transport. The class had such fun stomping the grapes.

Busy Bees off to their first PE swim session at Applethwaite

Our Wacky Walk was once again, a great success. The morning was a festive one with our enthusiastic participants tackling an obstacle course with perseverance and determination. Thank you to our moms and dads for being at the children’s sides to spur them on. Thank you to many staff members across the school and our PA moms for all their help and support. A special thank you to the Grade 3’s for setting up the course with Mrs Venter and for supporting and guiding our little people throughout the morning. Their maturity, responsibility, energy and kindness blew us away! Well done to each and every Pre-Primary child for their enthusiasm and participation. We are extremely proud of you!

As part of our ‘Healthy Living’ theme, the Clever Cats have been learning about ‘healthy teeth’ and visiting the dentist. Role play of visiting the dentist stimulated their imagination and our creative little dentists miraculously turned into doctors and surgeons in order to treat all their patients’ ailments. It was incredibly exciting to observe friendships further developing through cooperation, listening and turn taking.

Grade R outing to Dennegeur Farm to pick apples.  Thank you Stephan Beukes for the lovely day!

School closes at 14:00 for Grade 1-7 children as from Monday, 13 March - Thursday, 30 March.

No sport for Grade 4-7 children.
