17 March 2017

I would like to thank the large number of parents who took the time to meet with me on Tuesday evening. I have taken an excerpt out of my speech by way of summary:

So what is it that Applewood offers? It has been an amazing learning curve for me over the past few months. I have learnt that children love coming to this school. We are privileged to have a school positioned where it is – a country environment is where children need to grow up. They want to come to school because they feel safe and they know that they are cared for by the teachers. I have learnt that our parents are fully committed to the school and love being involved. Families feel welcomed and understood. We have passionate, innovative teachers that want the very best for each child. We teach children to think, to plan their own learning pathways, to problem solve.  We produce children who can think critically, who can empathise, inspire, analyse and love.  We encourage children to do extraordinary things. Children are able to be who they are at Applewood and we celebrate diversity. I have learnt that children from Applewood achieve great success in high school and varsity. This excites me as I look toward the future. We have so much to be grateful for.

Are we perfect? Of course not, there is always room for improvement.

Are we on the right track? Undeniably yes. As we develop significant relationships amongst ourselves let us support one another in building Applewood into the best little country school it can be. Send out the positive messages that you have heard here tonight, let’s celebrate our successes and keep working hard at our deficiencies. I am honoured to lead such a remarkable school. I look forward to spending at least the next 6 years at Applewood and I believe that they will certainly be special years. Growing an amazing school such as ours is our collective responsibility. Please feel free to communicate with me, my door is open to you.

This week started with a Maths Inter-House relay. Starting with Grade 1 class, children were given  number of tasks to complete. There was much excitement as each house raced against the other. Once complete they moved to the next grade. The questions were challenging and everyone was forced to think out of the box. One house immediately took the lead but by the time they reached the Grade 7 classroom, they were neck on neck.  The Grade 7's finished at almost the exact same time and the race was on to capture and ring the school bell. Royals proudly sounded the bell and became the first to win an Inter-House Mathematics relay. Teachers emphasised maths teaching in all phases this week and the excitement was tangible in each classroom. We look forward to Peggy Zee’s visit in the second week of August.

I am pleased to announce that we have appointed Mr Nico Booysen as the new Grade 5 class teacher. Mr Booysen has a number of years of experience working in the adventure industry as both a facilitator and a camp director. He was charged with the responsibility of directing summer camps in the USA where he gained a great deal of insight into how children and indeed parents function. Nico has a wonderfully calm manner with children and will be a strong male role model in our school. Nico brings a great deal to both our sports and outdoor programmes. He will be closely mentored by Mrs Di Tuttelberg, our Senior Primary HOD.

The Applewood Harvest Festival and Trail run is fast approaching. It is a unique event and has gained momentum since last year and promises to be even bigger and better than the inaugural event. It is Applewood’s major fund raiser for the year and relies heavily on a collaborative effort from all parents. There are a number of ways in which you can assist. Your class reps will be in contact with you seeking assistance with the stalls which need to be set up and run. The trail run organisers are looking for sponsors for prizes and I would like to encourage all role players to get involved. Entries for the trail run can be completed on Quicket. Please spread the word. It would be great to see a large number of Applewood folk taking part in the trail run.

A big thank you to Di Kilpin for initiating assistance for the Hout Bay fire victims. It was heart warming to see the response from Applewood families – thank you.

We look forward to parent interviews starting next week. Have a wonderful long weekend.

Baie dankie aan u as ouers wat Dinsdagaand die vergadering bygewoon het, dit was baie besonders vir my. ‘n Uittreksel van die toespraak:

Wat is dit wat Applewood bied? Hierdie laaste paar maande was ‘n ongelooflike leerkurwe vir my.

Mag u 'n wonderlike langnaweek geniet.

Baseball

The girls rounded off their foray into the exciting world of baseball at their final match with the Helderberg Pirates on Saturday, 11 March, where they won against Battiswood U12's. Our girls took to the field in the 4th frame, with game called soon after so they unfortunately did not get to bat. All the girls have acquitted themselves very well on and off the field, and have gained wonderful experiences and insight into baseball. Thank you to these girls for their enthusiasm and dedication, and to their parents for their kind support.

Pre-Primary

Clever Cats

Maths fever has been in the air in the Clever Cats class this week. The children have so enjoyed new, exciting activities and finding creative ways to solve problems. We have observed some wonderful mathematical thinking and reasoning.
