Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change. – Bob Kerrey

I hope that you all enjoyed at least some time with your children over the long weekend. The weather has been magnificent and I am told that I should enjoy it while it lasts.

It is alarming to see the increase in the number of examples of how people tend to treat one another with a lack of respect and kindness. The media has latched on to one such example this week. In contrast, much has been said about the power of kindness in the world of education. In the world we live in today it is perhaps the most underrated quality. A simple kind word or gesture can change a heart, can change a mind - how powerful. It is something which can and must be taught.

According to research the benefits of teaching children kindness are:

• Happy, Caring Children

• Greater Sense of Belonging and Improved Self-Esteem

• Improved Health and Less Stress

• Increased Feelings of Gratitude

• Better Concentration and Improved Results

• Reduced Depression

• Less Bullying

Let's work together actively creating opportunities to teach kindness to our children. At the end of the day, your greatness is measured by your kindness. It is something which transcends all human barriers. The following article was recently Tweeted on the Applewood Twitter page: https://t.co/iu3Wo4392s

On Friday last week we held our annual Inter-House Gala at the Grabouw swimming pool. It was wonderful to see practically each and every child participating. It was heartwarming to watch how naturally and willingly our older children assisted the little ones in the pool. They encouraged and aided them without complaint. Such a clear example of kindness to us all. Only at Applewood!

The interest in swimming is evident and many fantastic performances were noted. Excitement is mounting in regard to the building of our very own Applewood pool. Swimming is both a life skill and a lifestyle which is growing rapidly in our country.

Cape Epic fever is upon us.  The Grade 7 class were fortunate enough to be a part of the action today. They cooked and sold hamburgers to spectators at the Amphitheater water stop. It was an opportunity to experience a world class event right in their own back yard and to raise funds to go toward their upcoming Mountain 2 Coast excursion.

Another example of kindness is illustrated in a message from Di Kilpin:

To all the Applewood families and to the school – a heartfelt thank you for all the kind donations of clothing, toys, blankets, bedding and food for the Hout Bay fire victims and their families. Stella, Moses and their children; Bongi and her family and friends, and many others are extremely grateful for everything given to them. My car was overloaded with things and it was wonderful to be able to do something to help alleviate their awful situation.

Thank you Di for initiating this collection.

Have a great weekend.

So eg Applewood.

Ek wens u 'n lekker naweek toe.

Private Tennis

Isabella and Oliver Pritchett, Fiona and Olivia Boome and Angelique Coetzer all competed in the first of three legs of the Overberg Trials in Hermanus/Bredasdorp. Despite blistering temperatures they all played fantastically and have made it into the top 8 which puts them in great stead for getting into the team, all depending on the next two trials. Well done!

Captain Whisker’s 3rd Birthday Celebration

The Grade R's enjoyed our ‘Birthday’ theme last week and made wonderful contributions during our discussions about their own birthdays. They loved having the opportunity to talk about their special day in the year, and to reflect on the most memorable parts of their individual birthday celebrations. The teachers were delighted to hear about their ‘dream birthday party’ ideas for the future………………..such marvellous, imaginative ideas about themes, food and activities. What a ‘coincidence’ that our furry classmate turned three years old during the same week! The children celebrated in style. Thank you to all the parents who contributed party snacks AND healthy fruit nibbles.

Our dream birthday party ideas.................

CORE Kids is being introduced at Applewood School as a fun and safe way to build your child’s core strength. Classes are made up of age appropriate exercises that will benefit children of all abilities. Using the child’s own body weight means that the level is unique and suited to each individual. Some accessories may also be used to challenge and/or aid, as well as bring another element of fun to lessons. The aim of these exercises is to build strength and body awareness, thereby improving posture and creating an inherent ability to connect to one’s core, helping prevent possible injuries in the future. It also teaches children to focus their energy more constructively in class and on the sports field.

I studied Sport Science at Stellenbosch University and completed my Honours, specialising in paediatrics. Amongst other things I then qualified as a Pilates instructor, coached hockey for many years and became a Primary School teacher, teaching in both Durban and Cape Town.

I have been approached by the learning support centre at Applewood School, to start this extra-mural activity. Children who struggle with low muscle tone or skilled gross motor activities may benefit from this controlled exercise environment. Similarly, children who excel physically may continue to build their strength whilst learning to refine skills.

Classes will remain small to ensure maximum attention to each child. They will take place on a Monday after school (time table to be confirmed once I have feedback from parents) and will be 40 minutes long at a cost of R750/term. Each child will need to bring his/her own mat. CORE Kids will be offered to all learners from Grade 1-7.

Please contact me if you would like your child to participate in CORE Kids. You may phone or sms me on 072 244 7227. Please provide your child’s name and age and anything else you would like me to be aware of.
