'Out of the mouth of babes, oft times come gems.'

A twelve week first term has passed by extremely quickly, it would seem. What an amazing term it has been! The second term is going to be a busy one too.

The Harvest Market and trail run will be the focus of the term. I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to take part in the race and to put your full support into the event. I see it as a wonderful community building opportunity. Please advertise the race and the market to as many people as you can. A number of flyers have been distributed already and a second batch will be ready for distribution at the start of the second term. This is our major fundraiser for the year. It is set to become an iconic event in the district. I would like to thank the organisers and the PA who have put so much work into this event already.

Next term we have entered the cross country league. We will take part in 4 races throughout the term on Friday afternoons. Cross country is a fast growing sport and gives our children the opportunity to develop their skills and fitness in a fun and dynamic manner. Although cross country is completely voluntary I would encourage as many children to participate as possible. Training session will be run on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

The swimming pool has generated a huge amount of interest. I am delighted to announce that a group of parents have got together and raised enough money to get this project going. I would like to challenge the rest of the Applewood family to get involved. Please see the graphic below which divides the surface of the pool into blocks. Each block represents an amount which you could donate to the project. Once all the blocks are sold we will have raised the total amount required for the project. This model allows anyone to get involved and contribute toward the realisation of this amazing asset. Should you wish to purchase a block or know of someone else who would like to purchase a square or even a lane of the pool please contact Charlotte Kruger to lay claim to a specific space. Gideon Schoonraad has kindly put together an outline of the project below. Swimming is an essential life skill and such a facility will become a centre of excellence in our area. When the Clever Cats were asked today what their wow moment of the term was, 9 out of 19 said swimming!

As you will know Afrikaans Huistaal was introduced at the beginning of the year to replace the system which saw Afrikaans being taught in two parts, first language and first additional language. We have run Afrikaans as such in the first term and we have experienced a few teething problems.

As with the introduction of anything new, one has to assess and adapt where necessary. For this reason, as I mentioned in my address to the parent body at the beginning of March, we will be offering assistance to children who are experiencing difficulty in Afrikaans Huistaal in the senior hhase.  From the beginning of the second term, these learners will be taught in smaller, carefully selected groups, at a first additional language level. This will allow them to develop at a more manageable rate. It will allow the Huistaal class room for even greater advancement. We believe that the Junior Primary are well placed for success with huistaal Afrikaans and expect that with the foundation they now receive, they will succeeed in Afrikaans husitaal.

We have allocated an additional half an hour to natural science and social science in the senior phase. This time has been reclaimed from Xhosa where the requirements have once again been altered by government. These adjustments are part and parcel of the implementation process of our new curriculum and will indeed add value to our programme.

Communication is paramount to the success of any relationship. I once again invite you to make use of the open door policy that I have. Address your concerns with me rather than allowing them to build up in the car park.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a blessed easter break. If you are travelling, do so safely. I look forward to a fruitful second term.

Ek wens u almal ‘n geseënde Paasvakansie toe.

CORE Kids

CORE Kids is being introduced at Applewood School as a fun and safe way to build your child’s core strength. Classes are made up of age appropriate exercises that will benefit children of all abilities. Using the child’s own body weight means that the level is unique and suited to each individual. Some accessories may also be used to challenge and/or aid, as well as bring another element of fun to lessons. The aim of these exercises is to build strength and body awareness, thereby improving posture and creating an inherent ability to connect to one’s core, helping prevent possible injuries in the future. It also teaches children to focus their energy more constructively in class and on the sports field.

I studied Sport Science at Stellenbosch University and completed my Honours, specialising in paediatrics. Amongst other things I then qualified as a Pilates instructor, coached hockey for many years and became a Primary School teacher, teaching in both Durban and Cape Town.

I have been approached by the learning support centre at Applewood School, to start this extra-mural activity. Children who struggle with low muscle tone or skilled gross motor activities may benefit from this controlled exercise environment. Similarly, children who excel physically may continue to build their strength whilst learning to refine skills.

Classes will remain small to ensure maximum attention to each child. They will take place on a Monday after school (time table to be confirmed once I have feedback from parents) and will be 40 minutes long at a cost of R750/term. Each child will need to bring his/her own mat. CORE Kids will be offered to all learners from Grade 1-7.

Please contact me if you would like your child to participate in CORE Kids. You may phone or sms me on 072 244 7227. Please provide your child’s name and age and anything else you would like me to be aware of.
