“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” Bob Kerry

It is staggering to note that we are already in week 6 of the second term – time certainly flies when you are having fun! Our school is a very busy and productive place. Our focus this term is on kindness and I am pleased to note the increase in kind gestures amongst our children. Our wish is that this spreads and that we can make a difference in our community.

Last week we hosted Reddham for soccer and we travelled to De Hoop for hockey matches. Our teams never cease to amaze me. They, most often, punch above their weight playing against some schools who are as much as ten times as big as us. They display amazing grit and determination and I am yet to see any of them give up. I was lucky enough to umpire the U11 girl’s hockey game. They played a wonderfully balanced game of hockey. They were organised, displayed impressive teamwork and showed amazing skills. I was particularly proud of their sportsmanship.

Whilst most folk were enjoying the weekend, our amazing teaching staff spent a great deal of time attending a cooperative learning workshop. Cooperative learning is designed to encourage maximum engagement during lessons and provides teachers with a framework of practical and fun systems with which to enhance the learning process. I would like to thank the teachers for the enthusiasm and passion they put into this development process. I look forward to watching them integrate these ideas into their teaching.

I would like to remind parents about some of the arrangements regarding aftercare. Aftercare is designed to provide a safe area for children to be monitored while they wait to be collected from school. Aftercare runs from straight after school to 17:00 and is charged out at a nominal rate of R10 per hour. Currently all children are required to be in the Pre-Primary area where they can be cared for by appointed staff. The demand for aftercare is such that we have decided to introduce a second venue for senior primary children. The Grade 7 classroom will be the venue for senior primary aftercare as from Monday, 29 May. Teachers will be on duty there on a rotational basis. Children should only be in one of three places after school, at sport, in junior aftercare or in senior aftercare. Please note that if children are not collected from school they will be sent to aftercare.

This week we will be taking a good look at uniform. It is alarming to note the amount of lost property that is collected daily. Please could you assist us by making sure that clothing is clearly marked. In addition, I would like to remind parents that although children may, and are encouraged to, be barefoot at school, they are required to leave school with their shoes on. This will go a long way to reducing the number of school shoes which go missing each week.

We look forward to hosting netball and soccer matches at Applewood this week and encourage you to support our teams should you have the time available.

Have a wonderful week.

Ons spanne verras my telkens.

Geniet ‘n wonderlike week.
