“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think!” Albert Einstein

The final two weeks of term are always a demanding time. It is a time to reflect on the first semester of the year and what has been accomplished. The Grade 6 and 7 classes are writing exams, the JP and PP are wrapping up their terms, we are preparing for next week’s cultural evening and report writing is in full swing.

Thank you to all the parents who have responded to our parent survey. Your input is invaluable. If you have not had a chance to respond it is not too late, please do so by the end of the week. A great deal of time and effort has gone into reviewing the Applewood Hurt Free policy. Please take a minute to log on to our website and view the document; you will find it under logistics and then policies.

I would like to congratulate the children who took part in Boland tennis trials last weekend. This was the second round of trials and they all played their way into top ten finishes. Well done to Nikita Sulivan, Oliver and Isabella Pritchett as well as Fiona and Olivia Boome. There are 3 trials at the end and the top 8 players make the Overberg Team  that goes on to play in the Boland country districts in October. It is wonderful to note how tennis has grown in popularity at Applewood and I would like to thank Sonja du Toit for the tremendous work she does in inspiring our children.

In the third term we plan to recognize Mandela Day by making soup and sandwiches for Siphile Sonke. Please could you assist us by sending any empty 2 litre ice cream containers you may have to school.

During the holidays we would like to offer a holiday club for the first time. Mr Booysen and Ms Valentine will run a programme for Grade 000 to Grade 7 children. They have many exciting ideas which you can read about in the advert below. Please could you email info@swellendamtours.co.za by Monday, 26 June before 10:00 should you wish to book a spot for your child.

Have a wonderful week.

Warm Greetings

Sam Hamman

Geniet ‘n wonderlike week.

Warmbly Groete

The Grade 6's learnt about the different kingdoms that existed in Southern Africa in the 11th Century. The class was divided into groups and each of the 4 groups made models and artefacts of Thulamela, Mapungubwe or Great Zimbabwe. As you can see from their completed projects the replicas were very realistic. Well done!

Learning multiplication - making equal groups of beans.
