“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think!” Albert Einstein

I am sure that you are, as much as I, ready for the mid-year break. It has been an amazing six months, so much has been accomplished.

First semester reports will be emailed (Grade 1 to 7) or handed to you (Grade 000 to R) today. Please take the time to read these through with your children. Take note of the recommendations suggested and highlight the positive comments that have been made. We have such wonderful children at Applewood and it was such a pleasure to note all of their special attributes.

Mrs Nicola McDonald has been appointed as PA to the Headmaster of Somerset College Preparatory School. In her quiet and calm manner she has performed a critical role in our school so efficiently. We would like to thank Nicola for her many years of service and congratulate her on her new appointment. Mrs Amanda Luden will take over the uniform shop from the third term.

A time of rest is crucial for your children. They have been bombarded by information throughout the semester and require some down time in order to rejuvenate their brains. They need a break from their overscheduled, extra-curricular, full lives. In an article called “The science behind how holidays make your child happier and smarter,” Dr Margot Sunderland explains that holidays can actually advance brain development. Playing and exploring triggers chemicals in the brain which reduces stress and activates good feelings toward one another.  Holidays support the explorative urge and children’s capacity to play. Spending time outdoors can lower blood pressure, improve focus and concentration as well as mood. Just letting kids be kids will go a long way to refueling them psychologically for the remainder of the school year. I would like to wish you and yours a fantastic break and I hope that you enjoy this special time with your children. If you are travelling, do so safely.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Sam Hamman

Dit was ‘n ongelooflike ses maande; so baie is bereik.

Mev.

Geniet ‘n wonderlike vakansie!

Junior Cultural Evening

A very chilly evening was warmed up properly by the picnic style setting, not to mention the talent that was displayed on the stage at our annual Junior Primary Cultural evening. Ms Louw introduced the evening with the quote from Beethoven, "To play a wrong note is insignificant but to play without passion is inexcusable." We were treated to a passionate display by all of our children and a great deal of fun was had by all.  Thank you to our wonderful music department for their hard work – music is certainly on the up at Applewood. A special thank you to Mrs Tina Beaumont for the beautiful artwork which was displayed at the back of the hall and 4EveryEvents who once again provided furnishings for the evening.

Grade 6 Circuit Projects

The Grade 6's have been studying electricity in Natural Science. They had to design and make their own circuit with an on-off switch. I was "blown way" by their interesting and unusual circuits. We even had a rotating lit up fidget spinner!

Grade 5 Khoisan Cook Out and Hike

The Grade 5 class did a Khoisan cook out as part of their TIP project. They had to use ingredients that the Hunter-gatherers had available to them at the time. They were split into two groups: One team made a delicious potjie and the other team braaied. A great learning experience was had by all.

APPLEWOOD REACH-N-READ OUTREACH TO ARIESKRAAL

Applewood has recently launched a new community outreach programme called REACH-N-READ. This initiative is child-centred and our Club-L Avengers (the Library Club top readers) get the opportunity to visit local schools in our area, read books to selected groups of children, play developmental reading games, donate books and just simply give of themselves in a special and meaningful way.

To become a Club-L Avengers it is expected of a Grade 4 to 7 child to read and be interviewed on at least six fiction books per term. This top reading title can be achieved by anyone in Senior Primary who managed to do this successfully. Our twelve 2017 Avengers are:
Ciaran Simpson, Emma Green, Fiona Boome, Isabella Pritchett, Ariane de Villiers, Ashe Walker, Sophia Fitzhenry, Kara Smith, Emma Beukes, Annabelle van Almenkerk, Amelia Kilpin and Ypke Roose-Vandenbroucke.

Well done to these children for successfully taking up this amazing challenge to share their knowledge of and love for reading with other children in our community.

We are planning to have our children experience a REACH-N-READ outreach at least once every term. We visited Arieskraal Primary School who are in the process of starting their own little library and will undoubtedly benefit from the books Applewood has donated and the ideas shared around the promotion of reading.
