Those of you who follow Applewood on Instagram will have seen the photo above that was posted this week, what a wonderful school we have. A couple of children decided to show kindness by leaving notes like this on cars parked in the parking lot. Applewood is a place where children are encouraged to make the most of every opportunity. Our drive toward kindness is clearly in action.

As a staff we have created the Applewood Collaboration tree. The idea behind this tree is to share, explore and develop a common vision for the school. I have factored in the many comprehensive replies to our recent parent survey as well as responses from teachers in a workshop forum. I would now like to open the dialogue even further. The tree will be posted up on the glass door of the admin building from Wednesday afternoon. I would like to invite you to have a good look at the tree, ask questions if you wish, and add your thoughts on to the diagram. By way of summary, the roots represent the non-negotiables which form the foundation of the school. The trunk represents our attitudes and the manner in which we operate at Applewood. The branches represent the different areas of the school and what we do. The leaves are the qualities we want our children to strive for and finally the fruit is symbolic of the product that leaves our school to go into the world and make a difference, your children. I look forward to your input.

Thank you to Di Kiplin who presented a fascinating talk on cyber bullying on Monday evening and to the parents who made time to attend. She provided a number of very practical tips on how to deal with the cyber space our children enter each day. Di finished off her presentation by showing the following clip:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY it certainly carries a powerful message and I encourage you to watch it.

Many of our children have participated and excelled in the Eisteddfod in the last few weeks:

• Ypke Roose-Vandenbroucke (solo singing) – Gold Plus (Bibi Venter was her accompanist)

• Quinn O’Keefe Easton (solo singing) – Gold plus

• Joshua Povall (solo singing) – Gold Plus

• Joshua Povall (solo singing – duet with a girl from Lochnerhof) – Gold

• Salvador Chanu (guitar solo) – Gold

• Rosie House (piano solo) – Gold

• Emma Green (violin) – Gold and Silver

• Rosie House (violin) – Gold x 2

• Fiona Boome (violin) - Gold

Well done boys and girls, we are very proud of your efforts. There will be more entries this week – good luck to all those involved. A massive thanks to Ms Louw for her wonderful enthusiasm, time and effort.

There has been some degree of frustration with sports notices in the recent past. In order to alleviate any possible confusion we have taken the following measures.  Each sport will now have its own coordinator. Their job will be to coordinate each of the sports and in particular the notices that go out to parents. From this week, sports notices will go out on a Monday for fixtures during the week and Wednesday for fixtures on the weekend.

Have a great week.

• Quinn O’Keefe Easton (solo sang) – Goud Plus

• Joshua Povall (solo sang) – Goud Plus

• Salvador Chanu (kitaar solo) – Goud

• Rosie House (klavier solo) – Goud

• Emma Green (viool) – Goud and Silver

• Rosie House (viool) – Goud x 2

• Fiona Boome (viool) - Goud

‘n Groot dankie aan Me.

Geniet ‘n wonderlike week.

AFRIKAANS KOOK!

Yes, Afrikaans is really cooking at Applewood. Here the Grade 5 class is trying out their skills in the kitchen, based on the plot from their current Afrikaans literature book called "Die Geheime Bestanddeel in Petra Pienk se Piesangbrood" by Fanie Viljoen. It all worked out perfectly and the kitchen is still in one piece. We will now have to wait and see if the end of their literature book offers a success story to match it!
