Applewood children never cease to amaze me. The Senior Culture Evening and Fashion Show, as well as their efforts toward the Enviro Challenge are two clear examples of how they have done this.

I had the privilege of marking the Enviro Challenges which children completed this year. I was delighted at the high standard of work that was presented. Children really went all-out to produce wonderfully narrated and beautifully presented projects. The aim of the challenge, to get children into nature and share experiences, was certainly met. I encourage you to wander in to the school foyer to see some of this quality work for yourself.

The Fashion Show and Cultural Evening was a massive success. The display of musical talent and the level of confidence displayed by each child who performed was incredibly moving. Grade 6 and 7 children designed and constructed their own garments for the fashion show. Each item was constructed of waste and was inspired by the theme of saving our oceans. A wonderful evening for all concerned. Congratulations to Tina Beaumont, Ronel Venter and Johani Louw who drove this project with such careful attention to detail. The manner in which the community rallied together this week to ensure the success of the Cultural Evening and Fashion Show was truly inspiring. There were generous donations of goods, time and services. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those who give so willingly; such an amazing event would not be possible without your support.

I trust that you all received the document I emailed to everyone about the swimming pool project. Since then we have had a great deal of interest from a number of parents who have good ideas and questions. In addition we have received a few more donations toward the fund including one from one of our children who organised a stall at the Open Gardens and donated the proceeds to the fund – very heart-warming. We have approached a number of organisations to request funding and we are looking at ways to reduce costs. If you have any input you would like to add please don’t hesitate to pop in and see me. An aquatic facility such as this will benefit every single child in the school in so many ways. I encourage the entire community to get behind this project. Any contribution, no matter how small really makes a difference.

My first Wines2Whales experience was wonderful. The scope of the event is amazing and it is a wonderful advert for the Valley.

Well done to Oliver Pritchett who was selected to represent the U14 Boland tennis team this weekend in Stellenbosch.

We are in the process of interviewing candidates for the Grade R and Pre-Primary HOD. There are a number of exciting prospects and we hope to have the position filled by the end of next week.

A few important reminders:

• Grade 6 and 7 children start their exams on 20 November

• Next week is TIP week for the senior primary

Have a super weekend.

Fashion Show and Senior Cultural Evening

Ek wil my hartlike dank uitspreek teenoor diegene wat so onbaatsugtelik gee;  so ‘n ongelooflike geleentheid sal nie moontlik wees sonder u ondersteuning nie.

My eerste Wines2Whales-ondervinding was wonderlik.

Geniet ‘n fantastiese naweek.

The Grade 4 class had to brainstorm what they thought about homework. They then created a mind map before writing up their thoughts. This is Ashe Walker's amazing mind map and his ideas about the value of homework.

GRADE 6 FET TOUR

The Grade 6 class spent nearly a week exploring the Karoo and all it had to offer. First stop on the tour was Mossel Bay to go on board a replica of Dias’ Caravel; then on through Meirings Poort to swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall.  We then spent two nights at Grantham House the Environmental Education facility in the Karoo Park. We then walked in Bradysaurus tracks in Fraserberg. Our final destination was the SAAO centre outside Sutherland.

Here are some of the Grade 6’s highlights (raw and unedited):

Best thing about FET was swimming in the freezing waterfall in Meiringspoort and the worst thing about FET was the cold night at Sutherland!  Amber

My best thing about the F.E.T camp is when we looked at the moon, and then my second best thing is when we swam at Meiringspoort. The moon was cool because it look like it was so close and also it look like CHEESE. YUMMY and my worst thing was driving in the bus it was very stuffy. Salvi

My best thing about the F.E.T tour was seeing the massive telescopes. It was amazing to see how many mirrors they used and how cold they had to keep the telescope. My worst thing was driving in the heat.  Everyone got hot and grumpy making the drive unpleasant. Ciaran

My best thing was the Meiringspoort   waterfall was so awesome and long. The water was so fresh. I also like the telescope in the room it was so cold and cool when the telescope moved and when we saw all the mirrors, it was funny when we saw the man we thought the man would get caught by the moving telescope. Lea

My best thing on the FET tour was when we went to the Meiringspoort water fall and did a jump that was about three or four maybe five meters in to a very, very cold waterfall and my second best thing on FET was seeing the Moon through a telescope My worst thing was waking up early in the moorings (we woke up at about 6.00AM every morning) and the long sweaty hot drives to our destination. But overall I thought this was one of the best camps I had ever been one. Thank you teachers!!! Enzo

My best thing on the FET tour was when the grade 6 went to Meiringspoort waterfall. I jumped off the cliff (I jumped off a small one because I was scared of heights.)  Another one was when we were at Sutherland to go to S.A.L.T (South. Africa .Largest. Telescope) and the time we were at the hostel in Sutherland to look at the stars. The WORST thing that happened to me was when we had to sleep at 10:00PM at night but wake up at 6:00AM in the morning, but I really had a good time. THANK U TEACHERS 4 BEST CAMP EVER !!!!!!!!!!! Imma

In my opinion, the best thing we did (not by far, though. We did a lot of fun things) was swimming in the natural pool at the bottom of the waterfall. Despite it being freezing cold, we still had tons of fun and our afternoon was really going swimmingly (pun not intended). Maybe it was the cold water that added a sort of adventurous thrill into it. I enjoyed it because it felt almost like a secret hide-away type thing in the middle of the Karoo.  It took a while, but I finally thought of something that was actually dislikeable: the bathroom at Sutherland Hoerskool. Otherwise, I really enjoyed myself Ella

This camp was the best camp ever, my favourite thing was probably seeing all the interesting things and learning so much, but my least favourite thing was the freezing cold weather in Sutherland. I loved this camp and I will never forget it!!! Anika

I really enjoyed this camp it was definitely the best camp yet! My favourite thing to do was swimming in Meirings Poot waterfall even though it was freezing cold, I loved jumping in but I did get very scared on the big jump because I slipped when I jumped! My least favourite was the freezing cold at Sutherland even though it was amazing seeing the moon; it was just too cold for me! But other than that it was the best camp ever!  Rosie

I loved camp even though it was so so cold in Sutherland I thought I might get frostbite. My favourite thing that we did was most probably the waterfall, even though it was freezing cold. Jumping was so cool and feeling the air go past, but then the water hit and it was so much colder than I expected. My least favourite thing was nearly getting frostbite in Southerland. Quinn

I enjoyed the whole of FET but my favourite thing was most probably swimming in the waterfall at Meiringspoort and jumping in. My least favourite thing was almost dying of the cold in Sutherland. It was an amazing camp which I would never forget. Emma

I loved this camp so much but I liked the swimming pool and the waterfall the most even though it was freezing cold. Arden

GRADE 4 CAMP

The Grade 4 class visited the Bontebok National Park last week. We went on various hikes to explore the fauna and flora of the park. It was wonderful to see so many different animals and the variety of birds. We ended our history lesson at the Drostdy (museum) by making our own stokbrood.  What a valuable experience.
