Dear Parents

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” Oprah Winfrey

We find ourselves at the end of week four already – time flies when you are having fun. Boys and girls have been hard at work and have settled down into the routines and processes of their new classes. There has been a strong emphasis on collaborative teaching practice and general pedagogy this term. Our teachers are wonderfully passionate and keen to develop themselves to be the best they can be. At present eight of our teaching staff are registered to study. Keeping abreast of current trends in education and furthering our understanding of how children learn is critical to our success as a school.

This term we are focusing on uplifting the Pre-Primary playground. You may have noticed the refurbishing of the tennis hut. This venue is used by the Blossoms in the mornings and for aftercare in the afternoons. It has been wonderfully finished and provides a well-lit, satellite space for teaching and learning. Look out for the additions and alterations that are taking place such as the resurfacing of the bike track. Thank you to the Pre-Primary teachers who have put so much creativity and energy into this. You can feel the energy by just walking through the play area, such a vital part of children’s development.

Due to the increased water restrictions, in and around Grabouw, all cricket fixtures have been cancelled until further notice. The only sports fixtures that have gone ahead are the U13 boys and girls indoor hockey matches. Our hockey players are on a steep learning curve and have made amazing progress. The Water crisis affects everyone in the Western Cape. We have reduced our water consumption radically and continue to look for mechanisms to reduce usage.

Planning for the Harvest Festival and trail run is in full swing and the date has been set for 5 May. The Harvest Festival is so close to our Founders Day that we plan to combine these celebrations with the Harvest Festival. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school and recognize all that has been accomplished in the 21 years that Applewood has been in existence.

Although the Park Run has taken some time to get off the ground, we have now been given the launch date. The first Park Run in Grabouw will be on 24 March. Park Run is growing rapidly throughout the world and will be a wonderful community builder for Grabouw. We look forward to being a part of it.

This coming weekend Melissa van Jaarsveld, our Apple Blossoms teacher, is getting married. We would like to wish her and Darrin Meiring a wonderful married life together.

A great deal of work has gone into updating the Applewood website. I encourage you to take a minute to read the new blogs.

A parting thought:  Pour your energy into positive things, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Have a super weekend.

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you”

Geniet ‘n super naweek.

Apple Blossoms

Enjoying water play outside, loved their first Playball demonstration and messy fun with finger paint.

Pre-Primary 'BB Wolf' Party

On behalf of the ever so famous BB Wolf, we would like to thank all parents for the generous contributions to our fabulous Library Tea Party.  Despite the fact that our guest of honour never huffed and puffed his way up the hill to Applewood, loads of fun was had and some pretty neat life lessons were learnt. My, what big appetites our little ones had for all those scrumptious treats – luckily only a few gingerbread men were gobbled up in the process!

Busy Bees

Enjoying Bakers Day and learning how to interact and work with money.

Grade R

Letter sound of the week 'a' and practising their numbers.

FANSA

FANSA visited Pre-Primary and Junior Primary this week and presented UBUNTU - 'Circles of Stone' to the children. It was a wonderful educational experience for the children to learn about the South African Bushmen, Native American Indians, Australian Aboriginals and the Inuits.  The children had great fun in exploring their clothing, music and languages.

WOW

Congratulations to our Junior Primary WOW! children for their excellent academic, cultural and sport contributions over the last two weeks.

Grade 4 and Grade 5

Our Grade 4's and 5's have started an exciting new project called “Water Explorer”. Water Explorer encourages students to take bold and powerful action to save our precious water. This is done through fun, interactive water saving Missions. They have already learnt about ‘secret water’ in food and even got to make a vegetarian burger for Mr Hamman. They will continue to discover more and more about this precious resource throughout the year.

Grade 6

The Grade 6 class made kites at home as part of their Enviro challenge. We flew them to celebrate International Kite Flying Day.
