Dear Applewood Family

“So with imagination, ingenuity and audacity, explore, discover, change the world - have fun while you’re at it. Always take time out to love and to live. You’re going to be busy, but never forget family and friends.” Daniel S. Goldin

On Wednesday Mrs Margie Odell, a retired headmistress and junior primary educator, visited our school. The day started with an assembly where she encouraged our children to be sparklers and not balloon poppers (ask your children to elaborate). Margie has a wonderful manner with children of all ages and had everyone mesmerized throughout the day. She visited all but two classes during the day demonstrating some of the wonderful teaching ideas she has developed over the years. In the afternoon, she ran a staff workshop entitled ‘Put sparkle into your classroom’. She reminded us of the vital task we have as educators in preparing our children for jobs that don’t yet exist. She focused on the skills, which will be in demand in the future, those skills that will make people successful. She stressed the importance of ingenuity, divergent thinking and people skills. She emphasized the importance of teaching children to deal with change in our ever changing world. Her approach to teaching forces children to think out of the box and encourages them to validate their thinking. Margie’s no nonsense approach was wonderful. She produced idea after idea and gave so freely of her wealth of experience. Our teachers left feeling inspired.

Mev. Ons onderwysers was waarlik geïnspireerd.

Applewood was very well represented at the Grabouw Xterra with almost 30 children, a number of parents and five staff members participating. Have a look at the blog on our website that sums the Friday up so well. Amongst the wonderful participation, we had a number of very good performances. Of particular note was the improvement of one of our teams who managed to take about 18 minutes off their time from last year. Our conditioning, trail running and mountain bike riding are certainly paying dividends. It is remarkable to see the improvement in the riding skills of all of our children but in particular the junior primary group.

Last weekend saw the second full day of first aid training for our teachers. Wild Medics did an amazing job with the training and it was exceptionally well received by all. Focus was on actual scenarios and looked at typical injuries which could arise at school or on excursions. Thank you to all the staff who gave up two full Saturdays to complete this vital training.

The Music department never cease to amaze me. The Apple Rockers concert last night was absolutely amazing. The confidence and talent of the children who performed was incredible. The musicians, who gave freely of their time to perform at the fundraiser, were outstanding.  We are so blessed to have music teachers of the highest calibre. Congratulations to Johani Louw for coordinating such a successful and enjoyable evening.

Die Musiekdepartement verras my telkens.

The annual Wacky Walk took place today. The atmosphere was electric and there were some amazing wacky creatures to be seen. The course enjoyed a wonderful upgrade this year with a range of new and innovative obstacles. There was a great spirit of fun and achievement as participants completed their laps. Well done to all involved in coordinating such a successful event for the Pre-Primary.

You may have noticed that Mrs Rostron was absent today. She left very early this morning to attend her husband’s graduation from flight school. Our warmest congratulations to Jonathan.

Wacky Walk

Rostron vandag afwesig was.  Sy het reeds vroeg vanoggend vertrek om haar man se gradepletigheid van vliegskool by te woon.  Ons hartlike geluk aan Jonathan.

TEAM UP WITH BIZWENI

This year the Grade 6 class has had the privilege of visiting Bizweni once a week. Every Friday we visit the school and pair up with some of their children. It has been amazing to see how quickly our children have made friends with the kids in their class. Last week we were five minutes late and both the teachers and older kids were worrying where the “Applewood children were?".
