Dear Parents

Today marks the end of the fifth week of the term already.

The Tru-Cape Applewood Harvest Festival and trail run was, once again, a wonderful success and indeed a great advert for our school. The trail run was well-received with around 250 runners taking to the trails under perfect conditions. The market took on a new look and format and was very well received. Musical talent echoed through the orchards – a stunning day by all accounts. We are so grateful to Paula Fitzhenry and her team for a job extremely well done.

The Mountain 2 Coast took place recently. Our Grade 7 class took on the Epic journey made up of 6 days of hiking, cycling and paddling from Groot Vadersbosch to Cape Infanta. The Mountain 2 Coast has become a well-oiled machine. Jane and Ian Moodie started the adventure 12 years ago. The experience allows our Grade 7’s to blossom in front of our eyes. They are faced with daily challenges and are required to dig deep in patches. It is the longest excursion they have faced and a great opportunity to show independence. They are required to fend for themselves, be away from home comforts, put up camp, look after all their belongings (harder than you may think) cook, contemplate life during solitude, wash dishes (a total shock for some) and keep a smile on their faces. A life changing experience. Please see our Facebook page for the photographic account of their travels. As part of the experience the Grade 7 class study Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”. There are so many life lessons to learn. Take a moment to read it for yourself.

Applewood hosted the Inter-Schools Cross-Country league for the first time on Wednesday this week. Over 200 runners from U7 to U19 competed on our tracks running distances between 2 and 8 kilometers. A number of our children participated and did us proud. A big thank you to Mrs Rostron who coordinated the event.

Hockey matches were played against Reddam this week. A number of really good performances were noted. Our children played hard and showed real determination. Of particular note was the two under 13 matches where our boys drew a tightly contested game 1-1 and our girl’s team dominated winning 10-0.

You may have noticed some activity at the site of our new aquatic centre. I am very pleased to announce that phase one of the project has begun. It has been a massive effort to get the project going. I would like to thank those who have contributed with their time and those who have made massive financial contributions to get us to this point. We will be having an official soil turning ceremony on Wednesday, 23 May at 10:30. Interested parents are invited to attend to mark this very significant point in the History of our school.

It has been a busy and most productive first half of the second term. Have a wonderful weekend.

Geagte Ouers

Daar is so baie lewenslesse te leer.

‘n Goeie klompie puik vertonings is gelewer.

Geniet ‘n wonderlike naweek.

GRADE 3 AFRIKAANS FIRST ADDITIONAL

The Grade 5 Afrikaans children cooked up a storm in our school kitchen this week. They attempted to make something with a "Secret Ingredient", just like the main character from a literature book we recently read in class by well-known South African author Fanie Viljoen.

DANCE COMPETITION

During the holidays, I took part in The Battle of the Giants Dance Competition in Sun City. The competition was for lots of different dance styles. I was part of Taryn's Dance Crew and we did hip hop dancing.

I danced in the 11 - 12 year old hip hop solo category and in the 12 -15 year old formation category. Our group, Green Goblins, won the silver medal for our dance.  Abigail Henderson - Grade 6

LIBRARY PIRATE TREASURE HUNT

The Pre-Primary and Junior Primary children had an adventurous Pirate Treasure Hunt for the "Ever so Sparkly Button", based on a book we recently read in Library by well-known author Eva Katzler.
