Dear Parents

The first week of the third term has flashed by. The school has been abuzz with energy and our children have loved being back at school as much as, I am sure, you are glad that they are. It always amazes me how much each little soul develops during the holidays. We look forward to a great third term.

You may have noticed some new developments in the Pre-Primary that happened over the holidays; if not, I encourage you to take a walk around that area. Thank you to Mrs Malan who has actioned the improvements and additions.

Later this term we will be celebrating our 21st year. During the next few weeks, in anticipation of this event, I would like to provide an account of the school’s History for your interest. This week I will focus on Applewood's first three years.  In January 1998 the school doors opened with 27 children and only four teachers. Mr Tiens Kruger was the first board chairman. Mrs Helen Briston was the first Head and in 2000 Mr Alan Wyborn was appointed. The current Admin Block, Busy Bees and Apple Pips classrooms were originally Dennegeur Guest House. These three years laid the foundation for the success of the school and focused on developing the grounds and teaching facilities. In 2000 the school already serviced 66 families who were able to raise a massive R240 000 in fundraising to develop the infrastructure of the school. This allowed the development of the Kruger Block which  became the Grade 1 and 2 classrooms. The school has certainly come a long way since then thanks to the vision and commitment of those who knew that such a great school was possible.

As part of our celebrations we have designed an Applewood Cycling top. This kit was used by the Grade 7 class on mountain to coast and proved to be very popular. We would therefore like to offer this kit to our entire community. It would be great to see mums and dads, who ride, wearing this lovely design. If you are interested in purchasing an Applewood cycling top, please see details along side and place your order with Mrs Luden.

We have been experiencing some difficulty with the electronic calendar on our website. I apologise for any confusion that this may have caused. For this reason we have removed the sync function and I would ask that you refer to the calendar that Mrs Luden emailed to you at the end of last term. We are working on the problem and hope to have it fixed by next week.

Reports are perhaps somewhat of a distant memory for you. I would like to remind you that if you require clarity or would simply like to chat through your child’s report, please don’t hesitate to make contact with his or her teacher.

Today we recognized Mandela Day at school. In honoring this great man I am reminded of one of his quotes, “ There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Such wonderful advice, I encourage you all to strive to do just that.

Have a great weekend.

The swimming pool project is underway. We are all very excited.

 Geagte Ouers

My dank aan Mev.

Deur hierdie wonderlike man te vereer, kom een van sy aanhalings weer by my op: “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

Geniet ‘n wonderlike naweek.

PRE-PRIMARY

OPEN CLASS

The Pre-Primary will follow an open class format on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This system follows a child lead approach with activities centered around the following areas: a reading corner, sensory play, pre-numeracy, pre-literacy, fine motor and imaginary play. Children are encouraged to move freely between these areas, thereby creating opportunities for self-directed learning, facilitated by their teachers.

This format also provides a valuable observation time for us. It is an effective way to promote our own learning as well as design engaging activities for the children.

BUSY BEES

Having fun in the Pre-Primary playground.

GRADE R

Grade R's enjoying their new reading platform in class.

GRADE 3

Learning about length in Mathematics.

GRADE 4

The Grade 4 class took part in Africa's Biggest Cleanup this week. They cleaned the entrance of Grabouw and had lots of fun while doing it. They managed to fill 18 garbage bags. Well done Grade 4's.

MANDELA DAY AT APPLEWOOD

This week the Grade 1 - 7 chidlren took part in Mandela Day by making soup and sandwiches. Our children always enjoy this special day and also learn a lot about cooking. The food has been given to Ikwezi Pre-School and Siphila Sonke who provide food to underprivileged children in our community.

Thank you to everyone for their help and support and for the generous donations of food.
