Dear Parents

Afrikaans week at Applewood was a blast. Uitblinkers gave us an opportunity to showcase Afrikaans, Drama and Music at Applewood. It also allowed us to open a window into a day in the life of our school. The collaboration and collective efforts of teachers, children and parents was impressive. Mrs Steyn did an excellent job in coordinating the day and our children, once again, excelled on the stage. Boeresport took place on Friday, 31 August and was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion. With activities ranging from toutrek to sak reisies, a great deal of fun was had by all.

Our netball girls finished their season on an absolute high. Two of our teams remain unbeaten. A huge congratulations to all the coaches and girls for their hard work and commitment. The rugby season traditionally ends with the Bridge House tournament. Our teams performed admirably this year which is testament to their progress and the extra effort that has gone into rugby this year.

Adam Kilpin, Olivia Boome, Nikita Sullivan and Isabella Pritchett represented Applewood at the Overberg Primary School Tennis Trials on Saturday, 1 September. All of them came within the top eight rankings for their age group. I am very pleased to announce that Olivia Boome, Nikita Sullivan and Isabella Pritchett received Overberg Colours and will compete in the next Boland Country Districts Tennis Tournament in October. Adam Kilpin came second in his section but will only be eligible for colours from next year when he is u10. Special thanks to our fabulous coach Sonja Du Toit who, through her dedication and commitment has inspired and prepared our pupils to perform so well.

Looking back this week: 2007 to 2009. In 2007 two and a half acres of additional land was purchased for the school. Ms Dastile and Mrs Dunton were the new additions to the staff compliment. The first Apple Pie competition was held and the winning pies were sold at the Elgin Valley Market. This year the productions were Treasure Island and a musical entitled “Of flowers and Crazy Flavours.”

In 2008 the theme for the year was, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” This year saw the first family camp at Struisbaai. This was a great success and became somewhat of a tradition. The first Mountain to Coast was introduced where the Grade 7 class journey from Grootvadersbos in the mountains to Infanta at the sea. The PA arranged both an Art and Wine Auction and a Golf day. The funds raised made it possible to complete the building of the hall. The hall was a purpose build so that it could be converted into two classrooms in the future when a bigger multipurpose hall would be built.

In 2009 the Music Centre, Media Centre and the Accelerated Learning Centre were all completed. Clubs were introduced to the school week such as paper making, cooking, arts and crafts and first aid. Gareth Allman cycled from the eastern most point to the western most point of South Africa to raise funds to assist a child in need.

This week we look forward to the Dads and Lads touch rugby braai tonight and the Pre-Primary concert on Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Have a fantastic week.

KYKNET AT APPLEWOOD

Geagte Ouers

Twee weke gelede was Afrikaanse week by Applewood.

Me.

Die eerste “Mountain to Coast” is bekendgestel waar ‘n Graad 7-klastoer vanaf Grootvadersbosch in die berge to by Infanta by die see onderneem is.

Geniet ‘n wonderlike week.
