Dear Parents

“The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new.” Socrates

This week brings the third term to a close. It has been a wonderful term filled with many highlights, incredible learning opportunities and tons of fun. In the past two weeks every single child in the school has performed on stage. The Pre-Primary play, last week, and the Drama evening, this week, made me exceptionally proud. The children all showed such amazing confidence and performed with aplomb. This is testament to a job well done by all. I would like to thank and congratulate the teachers for their hard work through the term.

Mrs Helen Norman will leave Applewood at the end of the year. She has an opportunity to be a home executive and be close to home for both Emily and Ethan. Helen joined Applewood in 2015 and I would like to thank her for the huge contribution she has made. Helen has a wonderful way with children and her fun and friendly exuberance will certainly be missed.

Thank you to all the families and teachers who have completed the questionnaire from the School Council, asking for your feedback and input. Please could we request that you complete this by Friday, 5 October instead of Friday, 12 October, as previously communicated. This is yet another step taken in developing the new strategic plan (From Good to Great) for the school. At the beginning of next term, the staff, council members and various other stakeholders will meet to develop this plan even further. I look forward to the outcome and am very excited at the prospect of moving the school forward.

As the final term of the year approaches, we look forward to a number of very important events. These include:

• The Grade 7 Night Relay - 12 October

• ‘Building resilience in children’ talk - 15 October

• The Applewood Golf Day - 19 October

• Founder’s Day and 21st celebrations - 9 November

The completion of phase 1 of the Applewood Aquatic Centre is expected in mid-November.  This project has been funded by donations from parents and various fund raising initiatives such as the Harvest Festival – a remarkable effort indeed. We are still in search of further funding that is required for the second phase, which involves heating and covering the pool.

Back in History: In 2010 the helicopter carrying the FIFA world cup trophy landed on our sports fields. It was a very special year in our country and Soccer World Cup fever was alive in our school.  The tar entrance road to the school buildings was completed. In 2011 the Jimmy Rawbone-Viljoen Fields were completed. This was yet another example of how well the community pulls together. Mr Rawbone- Viljoen donated half the proceeds needed to create the existing cricket field and pavilion and challenged the rest of the Applewood family to match his donation. The official opening of the Jimmy Rawbone-Viljoen Field took place in 2012 and was celebrated with a Dads and Lads cricket match. This year saw  the Mad Evening Musical featuring Elvis Blue and the first reunion of Apple cores. In 2012 Applewood reached Green Eco flag status and took on such initiatives as Save our Rhinos and the Cape Infanta Outdoor Education programme.

Our children are ready for a holiday and we encourage you to make the most of it. Holidays are important for families. They give us all a break from the early morning mad rush, the constraints of time and the demands of schedules. It is a time to catch up with your children and give them your undivided attention. It provides space for meaningful conversations and much needed play. Spend time in nature, take time to read with your kids, enjoy every moment. Before you know it they will have grown up right in front of your eyes. Have a peaceful holiday.

“The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new.” Socrates

Hierdie sluit in:

Geniet ‘n vredevolle vakansie.

We are so proud of our little actors and actresses. The children amazed us all with their great self-confidence and charm. This was truly a team effort and we appreciate all the support from parents and friends that contributed to the success of the concert.

Pre-Primary Multisport

The Pre-Primary had so much fun today. The children showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. We are committed to developing gross motor skills at a young age and encouraging an active lifestyle.

Grade 2

We had so much fun doing science experiments in Grade 2. We learnt so much about acids, density, air pressure, the effects of carbon dioxide and the strength of the fragile egg shell. We concluded our week of experiments by visiting the Cape Town Science Centre where we programmed BeeBots and were treated to a Science Show.

Cederberg Camp

Last week the Grade 6 class were privileged to spend a few days in the Cederberg with the Cape Leopard Trust. The class had an amazing time experiencing the complex biodiversity of this unique and beautiful area. The amount of learning that takes place when studying Natural and Social Science outdoors is phenomenal. At each place we went to the pupils wrote up their findings and this will form part of their assessments for these subjects. Thank you, Grade 6 for your impeccable behaviour and interest in everything you saw.

Chess

Michelle Fisher (Olympic Chess Champion and student from the University of Stellenbosch) hosted a Chess Tournament at Applewood. James Hendricks was the overall chess player with the most points.
