“The moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability as opposed to resilience and hard work, we will be brittle in the face of adversity.” Joshua Waitzkin

Can you believe that we are already in week 4 of the final term? The year has been incredibly busy and the final stretch will be no different. Our children have grown so much and it is quite evident that they are nicely primed for the challenge of the following grade.

The term kicked off with a strategic planning workshop on the day before school started. The workshop looked specifically at  the input we have received from parent and staff surveys in the context of where we are now. This we compared to where we want to be (Good to Great) and a draft strategic plan looking at how we will get there was developed. It is most certainly a very exciting phase in our school development and I look forward to the positive advancement that this process will bring.

Back in History: 2013 – 2015: The Greenhouse was donated by the Pritchett family in 2013 and the Grade 3 garden project began. Applewood was featured on the Expresso Breakfast Show for our Eco Schools initiative.  Nicolas Steggman was included in the SA water skiing team and competed in France. 2014 saw the introduction of four new teachers Mrs Annie Aplas Hill, Mrs Marisa Malan, Mrs Anneline Steyn and Mr Alan Hart. Our marble chess board was installed and a new computer centre was donated to us by Molteno Brothers. Mr Brendan Brady was appointed as the new Head in 2015. Mr Brady began the fundraising initiative for the school pool, upgraded certain areas in the Pre-Primary, re-surfaced the tennis courts, introduced a new school uniform and piloted the Ed Admin administration programme at the school.

Mnr. Brendan Brady is in 2015 as hoof aangestel.  Mnr.

As you may notice, the newsletter is taking on a slightly different format - please scroll down to see the wonderful things that have happened at our school over the past few weeks.

Have a great week.

APPLEWOOD CORPORATE GOLF DAY

The Applewood Corporate Golf Day was held at Arabella Golf Course on 19 October. Paula Fitzhenry and Selborne Boome did an outstanding job of putting together this wonderful event. It was a perfect day for golf and a great deal of fun was had by all. The golf was followed by a most entertaining prize giving and auction. The collective effort of the organising committee (dads army), who were able to fill 4balls, find sponsors and make generous donations themselves, allowed us to raise close to R200 000 for the swimming pool fund. We are so blessed to have a parent body who are so supportive of our school.

Ons is so geseënd om so ‘n ondersteunende ouergemeenskap te hê.

BUSY BEES

Busy Bees learning all about ten frames in Maths. All learning should start like this, from the concrete where concepts can be formed though touch and movement. A solid base like this forms a springboard for future success in mathematics.

GRADE 3

Grade 3 had a blast brushing up on their team-work skills on Tuesday, 16 October. They spent a day at Elgin River Lodge hiking, completing obstacles, rowing and swimming. We are very proud to see how well their team camaraderie, problem solving and communication skills have improved.

GRADE 4

The Grade 4's completed their 12 km Gravel and Grit walk . They showed great determination and had lots of fun. As part of their Eco challenge, they jumped into a dam and made a muddy hand print as well as building an animal using clay and natural materials.

GRADE 5

Grade 5 overnight trip to Mooiwater Farm started with a wonderful learning exercise where they were divided into groups, given a budget, had to plan a menu and do the purchasing for their camp. At camp they were responsible for preparing their own meals. Menus ranged from vegan to not so healthy and each group was given the opportunity to explain their choices - a great deal of learning indeed. Next they collected Fynbos which was designated for the Grade 6 class who would classify and present a Fynbos study back at school - a real life collaborative exercise.

GRADE 7

Slam poetry is a platform which allows our children the opportunity to express their thoughts and ideas. A few of our Grade 7 pupils are currently involved in recording their Slam Poems at Elgin Radio. Soon to be released as a podcast!

LIBRARY

With approximately 200 new titles having been added to our existing range of books in the library this term, everyone was keen to get their hands on the most popular ones first. This excitement, together with children's natural tendency to want to move and actively explore, ignited new thoughts around the possibility of bringing more movement into Library.  Above are some of the games played, promoting movement and an interest in a specific series of books used in the particular game.

OVERBERG TENNIS

Congratulations to Isabella Pritchett, Olivia Boome and Nikita Sullivan who where selected for the Overberg Zonal Tennis team. They were selected for the Overberg Zonal tennis team that competed against Witzenberg, West Coast and North Boland on 12 and 13 October 2018. This is more than a great achievement as only 8 players are selected for each age group. Children from schools in Bredasdorp, Caledon, Hermanus and Grabouw compete in the trials. Adam Kilpin ended 2nd for the u9 boys. Unfortunately the u9 boys and girls are too young to be selected for the team, this is a preparation phase for when they are u10. From the match results of the different Zonal teams that played on 12 and 13 October a combined Platteland team was selected. We are delighted and so very proud of Nikita Sullivan who was chosen for the Platteland team to play Eden on 2 and 3 November in George. A BIG THANK YOU to the parents of the above mentioned children. Their extra time and effort has gone a long way to ensuring the success of these children. Your life is not complete until you have spent time with your child on a tennis court.

CRICKET

Cricket is once again in full swing with both boys and girls practicing hard, even in the extremely hot afternoons we have had. Congratulations to the Grade 1 boys who won their first match of the season by 26 runs after taking 7 wickets against Somerset College.

Our U11 and U13 boys played against a touring side from Twickenham on 23 October. This was followed by a braai marvellously catered for by some special PA mothers. Thank you to the number of families who then hosted the boys for the night. The cricketers joined us for assembly in the morning where they presented Joshua Hickson and Sebastian du Toit with the "man of the match" awards for their respective games. Our cricket captain then thanked Newlands House for the visit and presented their captain with a memento from Applewood.  Meeting new people from a different country is enriching for our boys and our U13 lads are very fortunate to have played 2 such teams this year.

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN

In the first week of term Di Kilpin and Catherine Boome presented a talk on building resilience in children at school.  They shared practical experience and gave us some solid strategies to work with to teach this invaluable life skill. Thank you to the many who attended.

FOUNDERS DAY AND 21ST CELEBRATION

Our Founders Day celebrations take place on 9 November this year. The celebrations begin with a very special Founders assembly followed by the Grade 7 brick laying and the driveway dash. In the evening the PA will host a celebratory dinner and dance. Be sure to secure your tickets early.
