Dear Parents

This week we enter the final week and a half of the 2018 academic year. It is a time to look back over the year and to celebrate the successes we have experienced. It truly has been a remarkable year. The articles below show a little of what has been going on at school over the past few weeks.

You will have received a count down from Mrs Luden on Friday, 30 November which outlines a number of important events which are due to take place before the close of school. One of these events is the Christmas Concert and Market. This is an opportunity for our children to perform once again and I would like to invite you to enjoy the evening with us.

Have a wonderful week.

Geagte Ouers

Geniet ‘n wonderlike week.

FOUNDERS' DAY

Founders' Day celebrations took place at an unusual time this year to facilitate our 21st year celebration. We were very privileged to have Mr Alan Wyborn who was our first headmaster address the school community. One of the first Grade 7 children to finish at Applewood Miss Briston also spoke. Mr Brynn Simpson added his voice with a message of inspiration. The message that resounded was that Applewood has always been a very special place, one can feel it when you walk onto the property. It is so nice to know that it is still that way. The Time Vault was opened and new items were added. It was then time for the announcement of the Keeper of the Key who is Abigail Henderson.

As tradition would have it, the Grade 7 class of 2018 then planted their bricks at the entrance to our school. The Driveway Dash rounded off the morning.

Stigtersdag

Senior Phase Cultural Evening

The evening showcased the amazing musical and artistic talents of our Applewood children. Well done to Miss Louw and her Music Department and Mrs Beaumont (Art) for instilling such incredible creativity and confidence into these children. Thank you Hanlie Green for capturing the atmosphere of the evening.

APPLE PIPS OUTING TO THE BEACH IN GORDONS BAY

The Apple Pips went on their very first outing as Applewoodians. They spent the day exploring the beach and playing in the waves. We are indeed so lucky to have such treasures right on our doorstep.

TED ED

Two of our children got the opportunity to speak at the Ted Ed gala function on Friday night. This is is a massive honour and we are exceptionally proud of Emma Green and Amber Mudge who were two of only five children selected in the district to speak. Our Ted Ed Club has been running since the third term and the speeches our club members presented were of a very high calibre.

GRADE 1

The Grade 1's enjoyed their outing to the Eagle Encounters at Spier. Here they had the opportunity to get close to some rather incredible creatures that they have spent time learning about this year.

GRADE 2 OUTING

Our wonderfully, interactive visit to Butterfly World. The Grade 2 children were enthralled with the Blue tongued Skink, Bearded Dragon and colourful butterflies. The children have spent Term 4 learning about insects and they have all presented orals and projects on insects of their choice.  The visit to Butterfly World links up beautifully with our Life Skills curriculum.

GRADE 2

ASSEMBLY - GRATITUDE

Last Monday, the Grade 2 children presented an assembly on Gratitude. Their message to the school was to develop an Attitude of Gratitude, to say thank you to parents, friends and strangers and to get into the habit of keeping a Gratitude Diary where you can write down what you are thankful for.
Research has proven that expressing thankfulness improves relationships, encourages kindness and fills the giver and recipient with a warm, pink, fuzzy feeling. We are thankful for our beautiful school, our children and our families. Please click on the link below to view the Assembly song.

GRADE 3

Thank you to Mr and Mrs Veitch for constructing our planting beds and creating our beautiful cottage garden.  The Grade 3's are very proud of their beautiful garden. The funds raised through the sale of veggies go toward setting up capital for the Grade 3 entrepreneur project which took place.  Each group of children manufactured and sold products on Wednesday. The next great entrepreneur is sure to come from this group.

GRADE 3 BOARD GAMES

The Grade 3 parents had a blast playing their children’s board games this week. The Grade 3’s have been very creative in designing their own board games. They had to write a full set of instructions for the board game and then test it by inviting friends and family to join in the fun. It was a huge success!

GRADE 4

The Grade 4 class went to De Kelders to explore the caves. They were spoilt with amazing whale sightings and incredible views. They ended the hike off playing on the beach and swimming in the sea.

GRADE 5 CAMP

The Grade 5 class had their last excursion of the year. They spent two days in Betty's Bay learning about all sorts of environmental issues such as: the decline in penguin numbers, endangered frog and chameleon species as well as some fun night-time frog tracking. They were also extremely fortunate to have sightd  Southern Right Whales in Hermanus and counted over 12 in the bay. Cape Whale Conservation taught our kids plenty of interesting facts while highlighting the constant need to protect and care for our oceans and it's incredible inhabitants. A truly wonderful outdoor learning experience to add to their collection for 2018.

GRADE 6 VISIT BIZWENI

The Grade 6 class have been visiting the Bizweni School on a regular basis most Fridays. Last Friday was their final visit. They took orange-jellies as a farewell treat for the children there. The Bizweni visits have been a highlight for many of our Grade 6's this year.

Verlede Vrydag was hulle laaste besoek.

 HIP HOP

Applewood Hip Hop dance students took part in Taryn van Zyl's - TVZ STUDIOS end of year demonstration held at Bergvliet High School in Cape Town's southern suburbs. Over 100 dance students participated. It was such an amazing experience for our Applewood Hip Hop team. We had  professional guest artists and highly experienced dancers, together with beginner dance students showcasing what they could do, it was a night filled with variety and excitement.  We look forward to growing our group of hip hoppers at Applewood and creating more opportunities for 2019.

Dit was so ‘n ongelooflike ondervinding vir ons Applewood Hip Hop-span.

Afrikaans Match-up Games

Why look for answers in the classroom, if you can rather hunt them down outside on the school field? Our Grade 4 and 5 First Language students had great fun while joining their team members in search of the correct answers. All game cards were designed by the participating players and the challenge of trying to remember where the matching answers were hidden, proved to be quite a challenge.

GRADE 7

The Grade 7's celebrated their last day of school before exams started.  The teachers spoiled them by cooking and serving them lunch.
