1 February 2019

 Dear Applewood Parents

The start of the year has been wonderfully busy. So much has happened in such a short space of time.  A warm welcome to the 27 new children and their families who have joined Applewood. We are very excited about the year ahead and look forward to increasing our circle of influence.

Thank you to all parents who attended the Parent Information Evening last week. I explored our new theme for 2019 - 'Increasing the Circle of Influence,' and touched on the strategic goals for the year which include:

The continuous development of strong reading and writing skills; greater exposure to technology; developing the soft skills that technology cannot replace; developing learning support as well as learning acceleration; staff development in the areas of technology, collaboration, social and emotional intelligence.

In order to achieve our vision and live our values, we will need to constantly work at the following:

Kindness; making learning fun; nurturing a love of learning and curiosity; creating an environment that inspires more free thinking and creating more opportunities for hands on learning.

2019 is set to be a wonderful year. Please scroll down to see what your children have been up to during the first three weeks of the year.

Have a great weekend.

Sam Hamman

Beste Appplewood Ouers

Die begin van die jaar het op ‘n wonderlike, besige noot afgeskop.  So baie het in so ‘n kort rukkie gebeur.

Geniet ‘n fantastiese naweek.

The PA picnIc and occupation of the pool was a wonderful occasion. Our Grade 1 to 7 children had the opportunity to swim a length or two of the pool in a fun gala and parents had the opportunity to socialise and meet new people. The new aquatic centre is truly remarkable. Our swimming programme is in full swing, we have begun our outreach to teach local community children to swim and a number of folk have taken up the opportunity to sign up for masters swimming in the pool. There is no reason not to get involved. You can find a swimming pool schedule on our website.

We wish to begin phase two of the project (covering and heating the large pool) as soon as possible. The starting date is totally dependent on our ability to raise the funds to do so. This will take a collective effort from our community and I would like to put the challenge out there to have a cover on the pool by the end of 2019. An official opening and naming of the facility will take place later on in the year.

The  entire Pre-Primary have two half an hour swimming lessons a week. The pool is indoors and heated to just the right temperature to create a warm and comfortable environment for those first, vital steps toward being water safe. Growth in confidence has been exponential and the excitement is palpable. A big congratulations to Mr Wood, Mrs Hamman and all the teaching assistants who have made the start of the journey so much fun.

The Busy Bees enjoyed their first full week of school. They experienced open class for the first time and loved it. They had the opportunity to collaborate with another class and select the activities that stimulate them.

In Grade R the development of emergent literacy is encouraged through a variety of activities. The children are learning to identify initial sounds and then they bring objects from home that start with the letter S to show the class. Their creative ideas never cease to amaze.

Next week will all be about stories, letters and sounds in the Pre-Primary. This is our special week for exploring and discovering the magic of reading. Our exciting Literacy Week programme includes a nursery rhyme day, dress-up day, puppet show, singing, READING and many more literacy inspired class activities. We are also looking forward to the Burning Books Bus visiting the school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dr Seuss could not have said it better:  'You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to a child.'

A window into some of what our new Grade 1's have been up to in their first few weeks of school.  Cooperative and hands-on learning opportunities have helped us investigate how our brains help us to learn through the use of a growth mindset, learning from those around us and some practice.

Our juniors doing Mindful movement on our beautiful lawn, first thing each morning. These activities  provide an opportunity to practice self-control and develop body brain connections.

In the last hour of the day the Grade 6 and 7 classes made up sandwiches and snack packs for the fire-fighters who have been fighting fires in the Elgin Valley since Friday. Thank you to all those special people who have been working so hard to protecting our biosphere.

The Grade 6's visit Bizweni School every Friday in Somerset West. Our children assist for an hour and a half in three of their classes. The Applewood children could't stop talking on the way back about how cute their special friends were.
