"Education is for the improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it." Marian Wright Edelman

Dear Applewood Family

It is so wonderful to be part of the journey to from good to great at Applewood. This was highlighted to me today whilst walking around during friendship day (as captured below). There is a positive vibe in the school and the forward momentum is palpable. The whole community is part of this and I certainly feel that we are making the circle bigger. A big thank you to the PA and marketing teams for the enthusiasm they too have generated. I look forward to big things this year.

Please read the articles below for a glimpse into what has been happening at our school.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sam Hamman

SWIMMING

Our swimming programme is coming along nicely and we have managed to work out many of the teething problems we have experienced. Our children have been amazing and the growth and development is truly remarkable. A number of parents have taken the opportunity to use the facility to train and some have joined a masters training squad twice a week.  Mr Wood and Mrs Hamman are working toward an inter-house gala and we have set aside the the morning of 7 March for the event. All Grade 1 to 7 children will have the opportunity to show how much they have learnt in the pool this year so far. The Blossoms to Cats children will have their turn on 4 March. Their showcase will happen during normal swimming lesson time. Parents are invited to come along and see how they have progressed. Clear your diary for the morning and join us in celebrating the success of each child. Mr Wood will communicate the exact details of the event in due course.

GRABOUW XTERRA

The annual Grabouw Xterra takes place next weekend. I have challenged the boys and girls of Applewood to participate in this, the largest event of its kind in the world. I would like to challenge mums and dads and older siblings to get involved too. It is a wonderful event which promotes both our area and a wonderful healthy lifestyle. Entries close on Monday!

APPLE BLOSSOMS

Book making for literacy week

APPLE BLOSSOMS AND APPLE PIPS

During Open Class the Apple Pips and Apple Blossoms can choose from a variety of activities where they are encouraged to solve a number of proposed problems in different ways. Open class is a wonderful opportunity to allow our children the chance to work together, negotiating different ways to find solutions. This environment promotes child directed learning, as well as allowing the teachers to work one on one with different children therein facilitating extension for some and assistance where necessary for others.

APPLE PIPS

As part of the Apple Pips hygiene theme the children learned the importance of keeping their bodies clean and healthy. We also looked at the importance of them feeling good about themselves. During Show and Tell they were shown how to brush their teeth. The Apple Pips spent the week cleaning and spraying germs. In this fun activity the children strengthened their hands, crossed their midlines and improved their fine motor skills as an added benefit.

PRE-PRIMARY LITERACY WEEK

Literacy is more than just learning to read. It also includes how children interpret and understand what is being read, as well as writing skills and composition. Forming a solid framework for literacy is an essential part of the Pre-Primary curriculum. Our Literacy Week was filled with fun literacy-inspired activities such as making pancake letters, making our own books, visiting the Red Burning Book Bus and our own dress up fashion show. Here is a window into our week!

Geletterdheid behels meer as net leesvaardigheid.

BUSY BEES

During Literacy Week the Busy Bees had the opportunity to visit the Book Bus and enjoyed exploring all the different books. Back in class the children made their own storybooks after the inspiration of the Book Bus visit. Literacy in pre-primary includes talking about books, print in the environment, early mark making and writing as well as sharing books and reading. All these are developing the skills needed for when children start to read themselves.

GRADE R

The five basic senses help children explore the world and make sense of what is around them. The Clever Cats used their senses in a variety of class activities. In this tasting activity the children identified and matched different tastes. They did not all approve of all the tastes!

GRADE 2

Our amazing outing to Acrobranch in Stellenbosch was a huge success. The children learnt how to challenge their bodies by climbing, balancing and locking and unlocking the carabiners. Fears of heights and moving apparatus were also conquered as the children experienced the various apparatus at different ability levels.

GRADE 4

Last week, the Grade 4 learners did their first Natural Science experiment. They had to prove whether yeast was living or non-living. Great excitement followed when they saw the yeast start to bubble and grow. Thank you to Mr Hamman who took the time to join our lesson.

Hul moes bewys of gis  lewend of nie-lewend is.

GRADE 6

FOSSIL HUNTING ON SOLACE FARM ON THE

ARIESKRAAL DAM

The Grade 6 class have been learning about the Rock Cycle and different types of rocks in Natural Science. On Thursday we were privileged to be able to look for fossils in the shale on the Arieskraal Dam. These fossils date back 300 million years. They were of ancient shells and small worms. How amazing for the class to be able to collect their own fossils.

FOSSIELE-JAG BY SOLACE PLAAS LANGS DIE

ARIESKRAAL DAM

MINI CRICKET

Our first round of mini cricket matches took place on Wednesday.  Preparations for these fixtures has been very good.  The U8 boys (photo above) won by 3 runs vs Beaumont and our U9 girls won by 24 runs vs Somerset College. Well done boys and girls.
