Dear Applewood Family

We certainly live in interesting times. The modern workplace hires good people over good skills on the premise that they can teach the right person the right skills far easier than they could teach a skilled employee how to be a good person. It follows therefore that a great deal of emphasis should be placed on competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration as well as encouraging curiosity, initiative, persistence, adaptability, leadership, social and cultural awareness. Looking through the articles below you will agree that the past two weeks have, once again, been packed with learning and adventure - an ideal environment in which to develop these competencies and character qualities. Our aim is to gift our children as Carol Dweck proposes:

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning. That way, their children don’t have to be slaves of praise. They will have a lifelong way to build and repair their own confidence.” Carol S. Dweck

Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend.

Beste Applewood Familie

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning. That way, their children don’t have to be slaves of praise. They will have a lifelong way to build and repair their own confidence.” Carol S. Dweck

Geniet 'n wonderlike naweek.

Xterra Grabouw

I am very proud of the Applewood children who participated in the annual Xttera this weekend. It was a very hot day and our Xterra Warriors showed amazing grit. Multisport continues to grow in our school and we look forward to our Multisport event at the end of the term.

APPLE PIPS

NUMERACY THROUGH PLAY

Play is the natural way in which children learn. It is the process through which children explore, investigate, recreate and come to understand their world. Play is an activity in which everything that a child knows and can do, is practised or used to make sense of what is new. This week the Apple Pips had fun exploring the concept of the number 2. They played with natural materials and supported the concrete learning of numeracy skills.

WISKUNDE GELETTERDHEID SPEEL-SPEEL

BUSY BEES

Learning to count, identify and understand quantity are a few of the important aspects of numeracy skills. Constant experience and exposure to numbers forms part of developing a solid understanding of numbers. In the Busy Bees class, children are introduced to a new number each week to build on their understanding and expand their current knowledge.

The focus at this age is on utilising concrete apparatus and sometimes the Busy Bees also enjoy the opportunity of writing on their white boards.

GRADE R

Establishing healthy eating habits and creating an awareness of healthy and unhealthy food choices early in a child’s life is really important. As part of our theme on nutrition and healthy eating we made posters, classified food, read interesting books, learnt about vitamins and minerals and also made our own delicious, healthy fruit salad. The children had to cut up a variety of fruit which at the same time strengthened their hands. Thank you to the parents who sent such lovely fruit to school.

PRE-PRIMARY SENSORY DAY

Sensory activities provide opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore the world around them. These activities are crucial to optimal brain development in children and the key benefits of sensory play include the following:

• Sensory play builds nerve connections within the developing brain’s neural pathways, which trigger  a child’s natural tendency for and ability to master more complex learning tasks.
• Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, motor skills, problem solving skills and also social interaction.
• Sensory play aids in developing and enhancing memory functioning.
• Sensory play is effective for calming an anxious or frustrated child.
• Sensory play helps children learn vitally important sensory attributes like hot, cold, sticky and dry.

Sensory play forms an important part of our Pre-Primary curriculum and we intentionally include sensory activities in our daily programmes, but once a term we put extra thought and time into creating plenty of sensory activities on our playground and then love to see our children learning and enjoying themselves.

GRADE 1

Grade 1 have been developing part–whole thinking in mathematics. This helps them understand how to compose and decompose a number. We used manipulatives such as counters and unifix cubes, later moving towards pictorial representations and lastly number bond equations. This has helped develop an idea of the relationship between numbers in number bonds.

GRADE 2

The children in Grade 2 are learning the concept of regrouping in their Mathematics lessons. The use of concrete Base Ten blocks help the children to see the practical aspect of regrouping and to understand the process.

The Grade 2 children presented excellent orals on their pets this week. Our highlight was when Albert did his oral on Brownie, his pet chicken. As Albert started speaking, Brownie decided to lay an egg! The children were in awe.

GRADE 3

Grade 3 had their first ever school camp at Bonamanzi. The children had an amazing time learning and practising valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, taking initiative, self-discipline, organisation, punctuality, showing compassion and determination. They particularly enjoyed the challenge of learning to row and swimming in the river - a wonderful and rewarding experience.

GRADE 4 AND 5 CAMP

The Grade 4 and 5 children were lucky enough to go on an adventure camp at Back2Basics. They participated in a multitude of outdoor activities including obstacle courses, hikes, raft building and many more. The main focus of the camp was to work on communication, problem-solving, grit and of course having fun and bonding with their peers. They succeeded in all of the above and we are proud of them all!

GRADE 6

 SIMONSTOWN OUTING

The Grade 6 class have just spent two days in the Simonstown area. They went kayaking to see the penguins, studied the penguins from the land, did team building exercises and spent the day at Cape Point. Such an exciting way to study some of the aspects we study in class. Thank you Grade 6 for your boundless enthusiasm in everything we did.

SIMONSTAD UITSTAPPIE

GRADE 7

The Grade 7s have started a yearlong Natural Science project at the Dennegeur Dam below the school. Linked with learning about sustainable living they will be designing and building an outdoor classroom using cob-building, as well as a floating wetland. We look forward to sharing more pictures as the project progresses.

FRIENDSHIP DAY PARTY

The Grade 7 class organised a wonderful "Under the Sea" Friendship Day Dance for the Senior Phase. Everyone danced the night away and had an awesome time. Well done to the Grade 7's who stepped up and showed excellent leadership skills.

AVENGERS AT DE RUST

Applewood children visited De Rust Futura to share their love of reading with Grade 2 children from De Rust. The Applewood Avenger's programme for young readers encourages consistent reading through activities such as these. This fun-filled morning was packed with dancing, reading and just having fun with books - most certainly the best way to get our children reading!

MINI CRICKET

The U/8 Girls won their first match of the season by 3 runs against Beaumont.
