Founder’s Day & Driveway Dash – Applewood Primary School Activities
Our Grade 7 Class of 2016
Every year in May, Applewood Preparatory School celebrates one it’s most important Primary School activities; Founders’ Day and the Driveway Dash. It’s a sentimental, heart warming day for all and is celebrated with both a look back and a gaze forwards. The slightly emotional assembly is followed by a fun ‘driveway dash’ (which does seem to get longer every year!). Applewood is a result of hard work and dedication for all involved and it’s important to recognise and value how far the school has come over the years.
The Driveway Dash
There are a few traditions unique and special to Applewood Primary School. A Time Capsule holds letters, uniforms, caps and mementos of the school through the years and the prestigious position of ‘Keeper of the Key’ is handed over to a responsible Grade 6 for their Grade 7 year.
Each Grade 7, since the school’s inception has carved their name into a brick which has been laid in front of the main school building. This year the names were lasered on. This ceremony takes place just before the driveway dash and marks the importance of the end of our children’s primary school career. Their names and their memories are forever held within.
Probably the most touching part of the day, the Grade 7’s write letters about their Applewood life experience and these go into the Time Capsule, only to be taken out and read once they reach matric. These letters say more about Applewood, than any marketing effort can…
